Chinese Military Exports (Land Systems)

The export catalog has plenty of "legacy items" but what surprised me is this:

To my understanding, that thing was more of an interim solution for those outfits that would eventually receive proper SPH, mating existing gun to an old truck chassis...

Modified(?) VN11A/ZBD-04A turret on Otokar ARMA 8x8 for Kazachstan:

View attachment 118278
Welcome, I've posted it here, it's more appropriate. See post #521.

BTW, that ARMA is in Kazakhstan, they displayed it during their presidents visit.
Well, would you look at that:

Remarkable ARMA 8x8 statement from the Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan:

Domestically developed Barys cannot overcome water obstacles compared to the Turkish-made ARMA 8x8 armored vehicle.

While the weapon module on Barys is equipped with a 30mm cannon, ARMA is equipped with 100 and 30mm cannons.

At the same time, it is possible to fire ATGMs with ARMA at a range of up to 5 km, which significantly increases the fire capabilities of the compared models.

It was claimed that Kazakhstan was planning to purchase 834 ARMA 8x8 Armored Combat Vehicles (ACVs) from the Turkish company OTOKAR for 4.4 billion dollars.

This statement by the Kazakh Ministry of Defense further strengthened the possibility of ARMA sales.

Is this an actual in production vehicle or a demo?

A thoroughly tested prototype ;)

So what's the story behind it? I don't see anything in English. As I understand Rabdan is an ARMA 8x8 chassis and a BMP-3 turret, so not quite the same as this.

How many Rabdan are produced so far? Are they switching to VN-11 turret?

I don't get what you mean. This is about an APC/IFV tender for the Kazachstan military.

Sorry, I'm kind of bringing in some new ideas out of the blue.

I'm wondering if this if this is a precursor to upgrades for the UAE vehicles.

I'm thinking, they already did the integration work for the BMP-3 turret onto the chassis. The armament is generally the same, so why devote the time to integrate a whole new turret unless this was already something in the works? Plus nothing in your link would indicate that the existing BMP-3 turret wouldn't fit the bill.

The only issue of course would be the supply of Russian turrets would be an issue given the current war, but this doesn't seem like something slapped together in the past year.

Pure conjecture of course...

The only other explanation would be that Kazakhstan really wanted these Chinese systems, and were impressed by some kind of other demo, but how likely is that?

See the explanation of the Kazachstan MoD:

"In order to increase the firepower of armored wheeled vehicles, due to the use of combat modules with a 100 mm cannon and an anti-tank missile complex with a firing range of up to 5 km, between July and December 2023, the Turkish 8x8 Arma wheeled vehicle with a VN-11 combat module manufactured in China will be tested. military use is underway. According to the results of military use, the specialists of the Armed Forces will give a conclusion on the suitability of "Arma" for the tasks performed by the Ground Forces."

I wonder what missile is used for the vehicle. If the turret is Chinese the FCS system will likely be Chinese as well, unless they made it open source.

Anyhow there is almost no information about this from Weibo. Keep us posted if new information pops up.

It's most likely a fully Chinese turret. I wouldn't be surprised if the Kazachs use more Chinese weapon systems from now on. Seeing how Kazach-Chinese ties have improved and Russian-Kazach ones deteriorated.
