Otter has the following revelations about VT-4 performance during the Thai-Cambodian conflict.

1) Neoliberal propagandists are upset that there are no turret bake-off videos so they accentuate the barrel failure.
2) Thai military trusts VT-4 a lot. It has spear headed the most difficult armored assaults against Cambodian positions and although it suffered some casualties (combat related or otherwise), as a whole it has performed satisfactorily. Thailand will continue to acquire more armored vehicles from Norinco as a result.
3) Thai military provided valuable combat experience for the VT-4. Most of the live fire involved mobile firing at the distance of 2KM, not “firing from fixed positions till the barrels blew up” as suggested in internet memes. The VT-4 also stood up to a lot of indirect fire. According to the Thai the tank barrel has been directly hit by Cambodian mortar fire but can continue to shoot normally after being damaged.
4) Mobile firing in jungle environment may have contributed to the barrel explosion since a mixture of dirt and residual powder can clog the barrel. Under intense combat conditions the Thai did not have time to properly clean them. Despite the fact that the issue stems from user error, Norinco will look into how to reduce this sort of mishaps going forward.

Norinco investigation results are out!
Norinco 对炮管炸裂原因的解释是:问题源于使用方未能对坦克进行正确、规范的操作和维护。其列举的原因包括:

• 炮管维护保养不定期
• 炮管内部存在异物
• 坦克炮弹储存不当
Several issues and all of them related to improper handling by the tank crew —
1) improper maintenance of tank barrel.
2) partial blockage of tank barrel (Otter’s theory that there are dirt and debris inside is correct).
3) improper storage of tank shells.

Furthermore, Norinco emphasizes that the gun barrel is manufactured under the same quality standards as those provided to the PLA. They did not find any quality control or material related issues during the investigation.

Any official source for the Norinco investigation results?

Major
If the sniper shot inside the barrel, what damage would it make?
When the bullet hit inside the barrel, it is just metal vs metal causing sparks and dented inner barrel wall and no explosion is expected, if the bullet is a medium calibre ammunition with explosive content then there will be an explosion inside the barrel though the damage might not be large.

The fatal part is if the damaged barrel is not replaced, the next round of tank shell might explode inside the barrel duel to debris or deformation of the inner wall of the barrel.

As a Thai, I am sorry for all those facebook comments in the original post. Reading them degraded my brain to an extent.

Like seriously, many Thai people just don't think at all when it comes to anything China. An F-35 crashed a few days ago, no words. An AT-6 Wolverine aircraft crashed and killed two airmen, no words. One of like 40 Chinese tanks has its barrel blown up? Then that means ALL of them are bad.

I swear, this is why we are stagnant as a nation.
