CGT-50

nice, I hadn't even paid attention to that. I was wondering how it kept saying 3-50MW & that didn't make sense if CGT40 is the largest in the family. Looks like there is also H-25 (32 and 42mw version). But a 50MW marine version would be quite something.

In addition, some time ago SOYO also noted a 60MW-class CGT-XX is in the works, though it's still quite a while away before we can see it in operation.

Excerpt from an academic paper depicting the 50MW-class CGT50 engine, which was described as "massive". Posted by SOYO on Weibo.

Slightly more from the same academic paper. Dimension listed as 10.5 meters long x 3 meters wide x 3 meters tall, and the gas turbine engine (CGT-50) is clearly listed as ship-use. Posted by SOYO on Weibo.

For comparison, the aeroderivative 40MW-class MT30 is 8.7 meters long x 2.7 meters wide x 3.5 meters tall.

interesting stuff from 爱若丰狂SOYO历

包头舰 is No. 133 and entered service at end of 2021. It says that it got gas turbine change in 2024 if we assume the term 前年 is correct here.

So the question is just what turbine 052D are getting changed to.

He is speculating CGT-30 is more likely as the marine version work was likely completed by 2022-2023. CGT-30 had started exporting to Russia by 2024.

In conjunction with SOYO's latest posting on the CGT-30M in the 052C/D thread, here's an (over)simplified comparison table between the gas turbine engines of the CGT and LM families in the 20MW and 30MW categories:

CGT-25M
CGT-30M
LM2500
LM2500+
LM2500+G4
Max Power Output (ISO)
28.7 MW
32-33.5 MW
25.06 MW
30.2 MW
36.98 MW
Max Power Output (USN NSD)
20 MW
27.5 MW
22.07 MW
26.63 MW
30.46 MW
Thermal Efficiency
36 %
39.3 %
37 %
39 %
39.3 %

TL; DR - The CGT-30M is comparable to the LM2500+. As for the LM2500+G4 - There's the CGT-40M.

(Edit: Correction of mistakes.)

I understand that Russia has been importing industrial, not marine, version of CGT-25 and CGT-30?

yes, it's very interesting. I do find it still a little strange to replace Baotou's propulsion so soon after commissioning, but having newer 052DLs using CGT-30M makes a lot of sense.
