Personally I don't get the hype, isn't it basically a tb-001? Its not survivable enough in a contested environment that having a payload bay vs mounting points would matter too much.

It's much larger and capable than TB-001.

Jiutian is some 53.6 feet (16.35 meters) long and has a wingspan of around 82 feet (25 meters), per AVIC. In addition to its maximum takeoff weight, the company says it has a maximum payload capacity of nearly 13,228 pounds (6,000 kilograms), a ferry range of approximately 4,349.5 miles (7,000 kilometers), and can stay aloft for up to 12 hours. The drone’s stated maximum operational ceiling is 49,212.5 feet (15,000 meters), and it can fly at speeds up to 378 knots and as low as 108 knots.

did you listen to the guancha clip on this? What do you think?

They think it makes sense to build it out w/ civilian customers first until it's mature and cost comes down. I could see it as a nice bomb truck. It would have less payload than H-6K, but should have significantly lower signature. It's also potentially really long ranged (7000 km), which is quite intriguing.

It's also faster than your usual turboprop powered drones like GJ-2 since it has turbofan engine and can fly higher altitude.

Another possibility is becoming a tanker. What if they do some work so that it can carry like 8t of fuel? It has the speed to work as refueling aircraft.

I think there is definitely a niche for this kind of drone due to the sheer amount of loitering fire power it could bring to a fight. However you have to come up with the proper strategy for using it. For all the military enthusiasts claiming that it is a good JH-7 replacement it is far less survivable than the former.

Do people not know what a ferry range is? If its ferry range is truly only 7000km combat radius with ordnance is probably something like ~2000km, still useful but not what some making it out to be.. glide bomb range will also be severely handicapped by the speed, unless one of those jet boosted versions etc.

I can see the usefulness of Jetank in logistic supplies to islands far offshore and remote border outposts in Western China, especially the islands in South China Sea. A formation of large number of Jetanks could resupply the islands quickly.

Its modular payload tank/bay made it versatile in many different situations, from normal low altitude economy, enviroment monitor and control, law enforcement, military and to disaster relief.

Problem with this kind of drone is that it is highly vulnerable to decent air defense. It is more of an arsenal plane for mop up operations than true tip of the spear.
I respectfully disagree. At its flight altitude it is going to have a radar horizon of 500 km. It could utilize high-end Harop-like UAVs for strikes. Such drones are normally limited by their communications range. It would be a DEAD (horrible acronym, BTW) monster against battlefield air defenses using such UAVs. Only the SM-6 might be reaching an effective range over 400km , whose land based deployment is a unicorn. With a good EW suite the Jiutian would be quite survivable. I think it would the ideal platform against all the IPFC, Patriot and PrSM batteries the US is looking to bring to Okinawa and the Philippines.
