It talks about "effective damage" though. Perhaps it could do physical damage (as in burn a person's skin since Kw would do) to human beings? I agree that it probably wasn't designed for point-defense in mind.

Laser being used as weapon as this stage is too impractical. They are too big and takes too long to heat up. The worst of all is that they need too much logistics to keep it running. So far the only "functional" prototype is the Boeing 747 variant that carries the missile killer laser. But anyone with adequate knowledge knows that white coatings can easily deflect great percentage of the energy. Plus if there are lots of cloud that day, the laser is then useless.

Do you think this is something that could fit on a type 99 tank, or maybe that the self defense laser on the type 99 works similarly?

If that's the case then it is probably a blinder. Now that I think of it it is only a bit larger than the device on the Type 99.

I don't think that laser blinder is really that effective, or else Western companies would definitely have fitted it on their own tanks. I mean those engineers are not dumb or lacking innovation.

It is very hard to blind another tank in real combat. The lasers have to hit the optics at very precise angle and the beam has to be strong enough, which require clear weather.

Gotta remember that no western country seriously thought about a canard-equipped 5th gen stealth fighter either. It's more about specific needs I guess.

Those blinders could be for optical sensors on anti-tank missiles. The US is looking at a infrared smart skin for it's armoured vehicles. So it is just different approach to the same problem.

The Brits used laser dazzlers in the Falkland Wars against Argentinian pilots and achieved pretty good results.
