Until the day when tendom warhead and top-attack ATGM become so common like in Syria civil war....Cage or Slat armor is intended to work by catching RPG type rounds and making them prematurely detonate. The Shaped charge effects are limited unless they make direct contact with the Vehicle hull. It's also lighter in weight, easy to bolt on and allows seeing through it which is why it became so popular.
If they were worried about that they would have traded the Type 92's in. The Vehicle is a light APC protected from small arms. A M2A3 with it's 25mm would chew it up as a light snack.
