MD-22 has 3 holes, is it 3 engines?

They all look different? Maybe only the centre "opening" is an engine, while the other two "opening" serve another purpose? Alternatively, each "opening" might be for a different engine or some sort of payload allowing the platform to test multiple technologies simultaneously? The layout just doesn't look like each opening is designed for an engine?

Maybe this series of aircraft is similar to the Talon aircraft from Stratolaunch in that it carries different payloads with each launch? Maybe sometimes they are testing engine technologies, or other technologies functioning in the hypersonic near-space regime?

The use of a balloon is kind of interesting? You think they would have just used some variant of the H-6 from the start? Might indicate a pretty modest start for this program that has gained traction as it has proven useful over repeated tests.

The test flight of the Jindouyun ramjet engine took place earlier today and was a complete success.

listening to Shilao podcast on this and they were supposedly trying to temper down expectations, but really didn't know down my excitement at all.

They said it is a test platform and it's still being worked on. Which shouldn't be a surprise. It's still a little small.

Apparently, it can maneuver at 6g, which to me is mind boggling at this stage.

Imo, they just need more money to scale up the size of the vehicle and do longer range testing for my platforms (like for example H-6K/N)

No one is expecting this to be replacing WZ-8 over next 3 or 4 years. But if they get this into service by 2030, it could be quite a big deal.
