Just another general taking talking out of his arse again...but it's certainly worth discussing as EU wouldn't mind taking the same course of action.

looks like china is emerging as the world's new leader in international policing. it would be a good chance for her to gain experience in onshore combat operations so far away from home.

world's new leader? not quite.

But certainly their commitment to somalia has been constant over these past few years, with a permanent flotilla of some three ships there.

And it's not exactly talking out of his ass as recently the EU authorized attacks on pirate home bays or the like I believe.

I agree with the conclusion of the article. The only way for land attacks to work is if the military involved (whether EU or China or US) establishes permanent bases along the coast.

Perhaps that's the real motivation?

I think the Top brass and high military level people of PLA want to test out its new C4I and joint operation... Using Somalia as starting point. There is not better way to test out your system then using real time battle.

I think China foreign policy is slowly changing.

Yep, agree with Solarz. This is about China securing lines-of-communication with the new

it's helping to build or finance in Egypt (the country's largest), Saudi (at Yanbu on the Red Sea coast), Nigeria (three refineries and a storage facility) - and of course existing facilities in the Persian Gulf itself. If the Chinese can rid the Indian Ocean of piracy, it will benefit all concerned (except the pirates and their dependents, naturally).

Of course, an eventual sequel to that may be anti-piracy operations in and around the South China Sea.

I agree. It's very likely that China wants to use the anti-piracy operations to establish a greater presence along the Somali coast. Coastal bases along the Somali coast and a naval base in Seychelles would be a very strategic position.

With all due respect, so many times people (domestic and aboard) considering China's voice, especially regarding utilizing military forcese, are more theoretical than practical, if not lip services - how could everyone so firmly sure this time, is the real one?

Gen Chen's opinion can be well consider as trying to persuade THE OTHER powerhousese to take more initiative on strike the piracy at the root, than actually sugguesting putting PLA boots on Somalian soil. PLA personnel never been good at make a diplomatic statement, but they never step out the policy made by the centre government (in this case, Politburo), which in no other occasion China has expressed such intention (oversea deployment). Not to mention the diplomat.com twists points around for their own reasons, as we well aware.

Besides, 2012 is a massive political shifting year which all over the world having all kinds of administration shifting / election. I would watch and listen more seriously, after the CCP's 18th grand congress session, (and USA's GOP), than of now. To me, diplomat.com is doing more lip service than Gen Chen this time.

Rather than engaging in tub-thumping, perhaps China should offer logistical and economic assistance to the African Union. Their taskforce has made some progress, but they're under-equipped at the moment.

While that's certainly a possibility, it is also possible that this general is laying the groundworks for a greater Chinese presence, possibly military, in Africa. Of course, at this point, all we can do is speculate.
