Did you miss the smiley?

If they tried to ram the law enforcement vessel, then the law enforcement agents were well within their right to defend themselves. The police were not firing at the fishermen, they were firing at the fishing boat's engines, and a bullet ricocheted, wounding a chinese fishermen who then bled to death before help could arrive.

I fail to see how they can play the victims card here.

LOL, hypocrisy much?

I'm Chinese BTW, and we Chinese are the biggest bunch of generalizers there are. Or are you going to tell me regional stereotypes about Shanghainese, Beijingers, HKers, Mainlanders, Fukkienese, Sichuan "Spice Girls", Northwestern "Macho Men", Northerners vs Southerners, City-folk vs Rural-folk, etc. etc. don't exist?

When Westerners want to learn more about a person, the first question they ask is, "What do you do?". In China, that's the second question they ask. The first question the Chinese ask is, "Where are you from?".

Police shooting the engine in self defence? Yes, I dont know much about Palau law. Maybe they can shoot at boat even it poses no danger to the police. But I heard some navy shoots at the bow to make warning or like Japanese coast guard they ram your boat. Anyway, in the end, a person died only because his boat is trespassing or illegal fishing. Well, if other people see this is ok, I guess this is the way it is. Maybe we can do the same to other countries' fishing boats.

" I'm Chinese BTW, and we Chinese are the biggest bunch of generalizers there are. " Really? What kind of Chinese are you anyway? I was born and live in CHina. I have never heard of Chinese being the biggest bunch of generalizers. No foreign friends or research articles that I know have identified this trace. Do you have research back it up? Stereotype by some people does exist, such as racism, laziness .... But I dont think any person can say the whole race is the biggest whatever. Some Americans are hardworking but some are lazy. Some Shanghaiese are smart but some are dumb. Some Hkers are racists and some are not. the list goes on. But maybe you have done extensive research about Chinese race that we are not aware of. Show it.

"When Westerners want to learn more about a person, the first question they ask is, "What do you do?". In China, that's the second question they ask. The first question the Chinese ask is, "Where are you from?". Really? I never heard of us consistently asking people where you are from in the first question. But I have heard American asking me where I am from. Could you point me to research source because it contradicts what I have experienced. Maybe most Chinese do ask people where you are from in the first question.

I guess you are a Chinese national holding a chinese national passport living in western land on a visa. Maybe you should go back where you come from and know the place and people again, instead on relying on stereotyping and generalization of your own people.

actually to be honest, i think we chinese can get along with most people easily..but it still doesn't mean we are aware of the technical components of racisms or generalizations. most really dont give a shit about it. calling someone gwai-lo in contemporary meaning is more of really referring to a white person instead of intended racism; however the truth is, it can still be considered racist.

as for the incidents, i just noticed there's been many high-profile cases of these ships going into more violent endings..and none of these do good for china. i really don't think all the incidents would share the nature where law enforcement officials choose to act in such a method first. although i doubt maritime law enforcement will be nice and polite, i still doubt the law enforcement will resort to ramming boats and looking at potential damages to their hardware in the beginning. solarz you're very correct that they won't give a fuck..but same logic of that, that's how the world becomes a worse place.

shit like these is one of reasons why China/ we Chinese today don't get proper respect. while a great deal of China antagonism from political level is biased and intentional, on the other hand, people like these (in this type of cases) gives Chinese a bad name. the good apples like most of us work hard to demonstrate a good image (parts of how the model minority reputation was built.. through hard work and stuff)..but these people will be the ones undermining it.

it's quite the same: so far there's been 2 cases of campus shootings by koreans/asians. if this keeps up, sooner or later we will get stereotyped as gun-welding maniac. even though it's indeed that bigots are the ones who will choose to be ignorant, but again, most people are very oblivious..

This is quite an interesting one.

Obviously most of the time Chinese Fishermen will be Chinese Fishermen, but this one has all the ingredients of something far more conspiratorial.

The long and time honoured tradition of Intelligence Organisations operating "Trawlers" off sensitive coasts
The unusually extreme level of violence and the loss of life (or at least causalities) on both sides
The very strategic position of Palau, sitting as it does on almost a pivotal point for the entire Pacific Archipelago beyond the second Island Chain.

One to watch perhaps?

Some people in the forum seem to have the uncanny ability to believe they know what majority of other people think. It may be something you westerners eat or drink. We Chinese just dont have this ability.
I guess you are a Chinese national holding a chinese national passport living in western land on a visa. Maybe you should go back where you come from and know the place and people again, instead on relying on stereotyping and generalization of your own people.

LOL, stop being such a hypocrite.

In case you don't even realize it, the statement:

"We Chinese just dont have this ability (to make generalizations)"

is just as big a generalization as

"we Chinese are the biggest bunch of generalizers there are".

So really, we have two Chinese, you and me, making big generalizations, which kind of proves my point. Except I'm aware of what I'm doing, and you're not.

Really? I never heard of us consistently asking people where you are from in the first question. But I have heard American asking me where I am from. Could you point me to research source because it contradicts what I have experienced. Maybe most Chinese do ask people where you are from in the first question.

One of the signs that you've got nothing to back up your argument on an internet forum is when you ignore all arguments that you can't respond to and try to pick bones in an egg.

Why don't you tell me that Chinese don't stereotype Northerners and Southerners, Shanghainese and Beijingers, Rural-folk and City-folk, HKers and Mainlanders, etc.?

Really? What kind of Chinese are you anyway? I was born and live in CHina. I have never heard of Chinese being the biggest bunch of generalizers.

How can you have any kind of perspective when you've never experienced anything different? The fact that I live in a Western Culture makes me all the more aware of the differences and unique characteristics of Chinese culture.

It is said that the most patriotic Chinese are those who live abroad.

solarz, aquauant, please, knowing what's foundamental point of your posts, allow me to tell you both that each of the other people do not intend to paint the Chinese race, nor nation, as some kind of evil centre in an underhanded way, case close man.

In respons to "The Capitalist"'s conspiratorial point of view at #14, it's an interesting point of view, but I would like to report that on Chinese BBS, both Chinese home grow China-basher, those who can't wait to see China collaps and is far more enthusiasm to find out another court evidence that the evil China is conducting another evil deed...

and those Chinese home grow fan boy, those who can't wait to see China rules everything under the sky and is far more enthusiasm to find out another evidence that the godlike China has put another step to that goal...

This two kind of people, both believing there is more conspiratorial things happening behind the newspaper.

My point is, the third kind of people, the professionals, please don't join them.
