Regular trafficking of weapons, drugs and everything being worth a decent price is indeed taking place in the straits for years now.

Those gangs are heavily armed and the triad guys know that if they get caught with automatic weapons by PLAN or coast guard patrols they could easily got ´shot on the run´. Probably the M4 found later by a mainland fisherman went over board during an unexpected encounter of triads and military/border security forces of the PRC or perhaps ROC.

Nevertheless the business of triad traffickers is steadily expanding and they are engaging now even in ´bride trading´! There are more and more guys on Taiwan paying a sum of around 2 mil NT$ to their regional triad boss and some weeks later their new ´brides´ from the mainland including ´genuine´ROC identity papers are standing in front of their houses.:D
So trading in automatic weapons is currently small beer for the snakeheads!

The Navy SEAL M4 is a rare weapon outside Amercia.
It would be difficult to obtain in the black market, even more difficult for a chinese criminal to lay his hands on.

It could have been easily purchased from a country and ended up in the black market from there. Plenty of countries in Asia getting direct assistance from the US on the war on terror.

The last post certainly settled that issue.

Man that is a serious problem with the US military if they found missing and unaccounted inventory of M4s. And a problem for global law enforcement if triads are equipping themselves with these guns.

Probably American military aid that was given to a SEA nation, and a corrupt official or officer decided to sell the weapons to gangs. Well, if the Chinese officials decide to work with the Americans, they can trace down where the guns were made, which nation got the guns, and go from there.

Bear in mind, it is only an assuptmion
There is no solid evidence to proof the gun belongs to the same shipment of weapons seized mentioned in that article.
This case remains unsolved, the orgin of the gun has not yet been traced.

BTW, I wonder what will the Chinese authorities do with seized weapons. Keep them in police custody? send them to the army for research and evaluation? Display them at a museum? Equip their troops with it? Sell them to other countries?

The police would probably keep or destroy it. There's no value in this XM15-E2S for China or any other country. If a state wanted these, they would have procured it decades ago.

I think the guns would just end up in the hands of local police units or SWAT. It will have no military potential but in China, people don't believe things should go to waste.
