It's part and parcel of Engine development.Im not an expert, but WS-20 has been in flight testing for a long time, i think. Is this a sign of design problems and that the engine may have to be reworked ?? or is this a normal thing in aircraft engine development ?
Every turbofan out there is a product of a decade or two's development and testing. That means, the turbo fans that are used right now are, more or less, products of 1980s and 1990s.
WS-20 was expected (by a minority in this forum that includes me) to appear on Y-20s by 2020.
This document, even though doesn't mention the WS-20, is a signal that testing conditions regarding High Bypass turbo fans in China hasn't matured yet and therefore will impact WS-20 and later HBTurboFans.
Can China still equip Y-20 with the engines? Yes,possibly. But China has to seek foreign testing assistance (Russia has the PD-90 engines...)
China wants to develop a whole engine development and testing ecosystem. WS-20 is merely a stepping stone for that.
