“The cliched image of Chinese competition was one of cheap copies. I think the wake-up call for us when we were on this trip is that this is no longer the case.”

I find it hard to believe that Swedes are this delusional in the information age :p
Swedes are on another level of delusion that even other westerners cannot stand them. Is that why they hate China so much? Because of the more deluded they are?

For non-obsessed, average intel people around the globe, I think the image of "cheap dolls, copies and whatnot" actually ended finally around 2013-14. After that followed "but they just produce blatant copies of high tech that we came up with". Nowadays it's more like "at last they finally came up with an original product and it might be cheaper but at least ours look better"

I think the author or the Swedes might be a bit behind the times.

You might underestimate how stupid people are. Even in Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the image of China is still a producer of cheap fake products and their "made in Vietnam/Thailand/etc" stuff are better without any reasons, not to mention "made in West/Japan/Korean" products are worshiped like Gods.

the April 2024 edition of its World Economic Outlook publication, which extends the horizon of its economic projections to 2029.

At current exchange rates, the IMF projects China's GDP in 2029 to be USD $24.8tn compared to USA's projected GDP of $35tn. That is to say, the projection is for China's GDP in 2029 to be 71% of USA's GDP, up from 65% in 2023.

This represents a downgrade from the previous October 2023 projection (72% in 2028), which was a significant downgrade from the April 2023 projection (85% in 2028) which in turn was a significant downgrade from the October 2022 projection (93% in 2027).

In PPP terms, the IMF projects China's GDP in 2029 to be $46.3tn or 132% of USA's projected GDP, up from 120% in 2023 but down from 134% in 2028 as projected in the October 2023 publication.

A further breakdown in terms of exports and imports would be even more helpful. Due to US-China tech war, supply chains are getting reshuffled, and I have seen South Korea and Taiwan started exporting much more to the US. I don't think the import side would have changed much for them.
