Chinese Economics Thread

They honestly should be at this point. Excluding them is ridiculous even if they have more autonomy.

With those two the Chinese GDP for 2021 is $18.1 trillion

Statistically a bit awkward, since they don't use the same currency the HKD is pegged to the dollar, simpler if it was pegged to the renminbi. End of the day it would just be for bragging rights which isn't something the mainland cares a whole lot about and as someone else has already pointed out every year the proportion has diminished to a point where it barely matters

For practical reasons I would like them to be excluded.

Mainland follows its own economic policies and laws. To have a clear picture of what's the economic condition of the Mainland its better that we keep its economic data separated from HK and Macau.

And a small bonus, it makes the West underestimate China's economy by not including HK + Macau.

Macau is a non-factor, it is essentially a massive gambling house for mainlanders and Taiwanese.

HK's importance is nowhere near what it once was and decreasing everyday. Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen are now larger financial centers. Its contribution to China's GDP ranks between Shanxi and Inner Mongolia.

This shows you how big China's economy is these days. By the way Hong Kong's per capita gdp is still higher than that of Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai.
