Chinese Economics Thread

Dude look at his new tweets. Tell me what you think he wants.

Why is Trump conflating HK with trade is war.
M'kay I don't use Twitter and I don't usually follow what he says unless it's so funny it ends up on the news but one of them is probably him realizing how desperate he sounded asking for a meeting with Xi so he's covering it up (and this is definitely better than the "I said 'would' when I meant 'wouldn't'" that he used last time) and the other one is him doing his best, saying whatever data-unsupported nonsense he can think of to instill confidence in the US economy since yesterday the stocks plummeted from the recession sign (2-year, 10-year bond crossing).

Edit: Yeah, he even deleted the "Personal meeting?" part from his original post probably because all his aides blew up his phone telling him how weak that sounds. So this is definitely him trying to rescue that.

China has to take countermeasures in response to U.S. announcement of tariff hikes

China has to take necessary countermeasures in response to the U.S. announcement of imposing additional 10 percent tariffs on 300 billion U.S. dollars of Chinese imports, an official with the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council said Thursday.

The U.S. move seriously violated the consensus reached between the two heads of state in Argentina and Osaka, Japan, and deviated from the right track of settling differences through consultations, the official said, adding that China has to take necessary countermeasures.

WTO paves way for China to seek sanctions against U.S.
By Stephanie Nebehay

GENEVA, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The World Trade Organization (WTO) on Thursday adopted final findings against U.S. duties imposed on a range of Chinese imports, effectively giving Beijing a green light to seek compensatory sanctions.

The case turned on U.S. calculation of countervailing duties in 17 investigations begun by the Department of Commerce, which found that Chinese state-owned and state-invested enterprises provided steel and other inputs to domestic firms for less than adequate remuneration. Washington deems them illegal subsidies.

The world's two largest economies are locked in a wider trade dispute but are seeking to reach a deal to lessen simmering tensions.

The U.S. delegation said it did not view the WTO findings as valid and was not joining a consensus on the Dispute Settlement Body's adoption of the WTO Appellate Body's report last month that largely upheld an earlier ruling, trade sources said.

The WTO appeals body had applied "the wrong legal interpretation in this dispute", while China continues to be the "serial offender" of the WTO's subsidies agreement, the U.S. delegation said in a text seen by Reuters.

"This is a very serious problem, with grave implications for the global trading system," it told the closed-door talks.

China also voiced dismay with the appeals body ruling, particularly its "sweeping" interpretation of the term "public body" under WTO subsidy rules.

"But these (WTO) reports are nevertheless sufficient to establish that the United States has acted unlawfully in the investigations at issue by countervailing alleged 'input subsidies' that do not, in fact, exist," China's delegation said.

"The U.S. Department of Commerce can no longer presume that in-country prices are 'distorted' and force respondents to prove the contrary," it said.

"China calls on the United States to reform its countervailing duty practices more generally to conform to these rulings, with respect to investigations of both Chinese products and those of other members," it added.

Unlike the United States, China did not believe that the appeals body had exceeded its authority, Beijing's delegation said.

The European Union (EU) and Canada expressed concern at the U.S. position that it was not joining consensus, citing WTO rules that the only way to block adoption of reports was unanimous rejection, trade sources said. (Reporting by Stephanie Nebehay; Editing by Toby Chopra)

I heard Trump on the radio and he said China was about out of jobs because he drained them out of China because of his tariffs. So he thinks the only jobs in China are making things for foreigners. And this guy thinks he's a grand businessman who believes the only jobs in China are provided by US corporations. His alt-right followers living in their mother's basement I can see believing that but a self-proclaimed genius businessman? He just better be speaking to his base because if he's that dumb, China should not ever listen to the US.

On the other hand, he did convince a lot of people that he's an actual billionaire, all without releasing his tax returns.

And those that follow and believes in Trump must've graduated from Trump University.:p:D
