The bird's-eye view photo taken on April 17, 2011 shows a residential community in Dujiangyan, southwest China's Sichuan Province. Mu Hong, vice director of China's National Development and Reform Commission, on Tuesday said 95 percent of the post-quake reconstruction projects have been completed so far in the areas hit by a devastating earthquake three years ago. According to the country's general reconstruction plan, the rebuilding in the quake zones is expected to be fully completed by the end of September, Mu Hong said. The devastating quake centered in Wenchuan County in southwestern Sichuan on May 12, 2008 left 87,000 people dead or missing and millions homeless. (Xinhua/Liu Yinghua)

"Huge recovery effort revives China's quake zone

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN

...
"We've recovered pretty quick," said Song Jinfeng, a project manager strolling beside Wenchuan's Min river that had been the only route of escape after the quake sent rock slides hurtling down the slopes, blocking all major roads.

"It's housing first, then basic infrastructure, public services and finally jobs," Song said, listing the project's oft repeated priorities.

Key to this success has been the allocation of about $11 billion in government reconstruction funds, an option not available to impoverished Haiti, where January's 7.0-magnitude earthquake killed an estimated 200,000 people and left 3 million in need of food, shelter and medicine.

While per capita annual incomes in the Sichuan quake zones hover at around 3,000 yuan ($440), China's booming economy and surging government revenues mean there is no shortage of funding.

Add to that fiscal muscle China's powerful manufacturing and construction capacity, a surfeit of engineering expertise, and strong transport infrastructure. A further advantage in China's topdown communist system, which is suited to such crisis response, setting clear goals without lengthy discussion, and providing a cadre of party officials accountable to the leadership.
...
To help speed the recovery and provide added oversight, China's central government ordered every province, region and major city in the country to adopt an affected county and provide funds and expertise.

The relatively wealthy eastern province of Shandong has overseen Wenchuan's rebuilding with designs meant to minimize damage from any future quakes. Crowded neighborhoods were bulldozed and new buildings constructed well clear of the steep valley walls.
...
Construction costs are higher than for similar projects elsewhere in China, partly because of a dearth of workers and the need to truck in supplies. Also, engineering experts from China's leading universities were recruited to design buildings capable of withstanding quakes of up to magnitude-9.0. The structures have thicker walls, heavier steel beams and extra iron reinforcing."

I am glad that they completely rebuild to even better Sichuan. That is the advantage of Authoritarian goverment. Swift action and no bullshiting compare that to Haiti

Blaming , finger pointing, recrimination is not going to bring the dead alive. The best way to honour the dead is to keep going living and built a better future.

Thanks Martian for the Photo and do keep onposting them on this forum. show the world that China is not made up of cruel and selfish people but people of generosity and sharing as exemplify by the rebuilding of Sichuan. I am proud at the response of Chinese public and goverment to the tragedy of Sichuan

Proof that those dissident like Ai Wei Wei is nothing but paid agent provocateur who is out to profit from tragedy and nothing but big mouth

Certain value DOSE shed light beyond citizenship it seemed, WELL SAID Pal!

Despite hardship and difficulty, Chinese people ignoring whatever BS (from whichever corner) and build HOPE, on our own.

Yesterday was the third anniversary of Wenchuan earthquake They keep the promise and completely rebuild Sichuan

This is well made Video. CCTV is running serial on rebuilding of Wenchuan

This is the best way to honour the dead. Living well and continue on living. Recrimination and finger pointing is not going to bring the dead alive. But unfortunately some people like to use tragedy to advance their agenda. Shame on you socalled freedom fighter

It easy to shout empty word but rebuilding is more difficult. This is what a strong country can do! enjoy

Actually I think the images in the right background of the first photo in post 81 looks like an overlay, the sort one encounters in a town planning office or a developers promotion. Perhaps its just the photographic work. Maybe someone could come up with mor close ups, similar to the photos I saw (forgot where) of China's uninhabited cities in Mongolia.

Hmm I don't have any experience in that particular field to be able to comment, but I personally feel that it should be real. That isn't to say it doesn't look a bit fake considering how "pristine" and similar the buildings all look next to each other in the background.
What's important is that people have homes to live in. Like Hendrik said, honour the dead by living well :)
Very poetic.

It's more possible to fake a manned moon landing than to fake newly built buildings in a city since any anyone can just fly in as a tourist to see for himself if the buildings are really there. As for now, no one, as yet, has gone back to the moon to look for physical evidence of the Apollo moon landing.
