XI'AN, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Two people are confirmed dead and 16 others are missing after torrential rains caused a rock and mud slide in the suburbs of Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Friday evening, local authorities said.

The accident happened at around 6 p.m. in a village of Luanzhen Township on the outskirts of Chang'an District, according to sources with the municipal emergency management authorities in Xi'an.

They said the rock and mud slide damaged two residential houses as well as roads, bridges and power supply facilities. Rescuers have so far saved four people who were trapped, and rescue work is continuing.

Summer Sweat Games, an event organized by fashion brand Lululemon for National Fitness Day on Aug 8, witnessed an array of on-site sport activities. [All Photos provided to China Daily]



To get Shanghai warmed up ahead of National Fitness Day on August 8, a number of sports activities took place across the city.



Cycling, footgolf, pickleball, Frisbee, and other sporting activities were organized on Anyi Road in Jing'an district throughout last weekend, turning the street into city hot spot that combined fashion, games, fitness and a market.

Organized by "athleisure" brand Lululemon, the "Summer Sweat Games" also invited professional coaches to carry out group training in on-site activities, such as yoga and boxing, as well as other games.

Participants were assigned to a team, which competed across all the activities, and the winning team will go on to compete in the national games in Shenzhen on August 27 with other regional champions.

"I hope everyone can see National Fitness Day not only as just a special date, but also as a good chance to improve their physical abilities," said Zhou Guanyu, China's first-ever Formula 1 driver, at the Summer Sweat Games.

"A healthy body is the most important thing, so enjoy the possibilities that the fitness day might bring you," added Zhou, the new brand ambassador of Lululemon.

This year, after the successful staging of the "Village Basketball Association", known in Chinese as Cun BA, in Guizhou province, the "Village Super (Soccer) League", known in Chinese as cun chao, became a sensational event, attracting audiences from both home and abroad to the southwestern province.

On the evening of July 29, the final of the Village Super drew thousands of people to a fully-packed stadium. Since its launch on May 13, the league has attracted over 3.38 million fans.

The soccer league, known as the "Village Super", consists of 20 teams from various villages and ethnic groups in Rongjiang county, Guizhou. The players are amateurs from all walks of life, including farmers, students, businessmen, police officers and drivers age 15 to 50.

The charm of rural sports events lies not only in the fierce competition on the field but also in the integration of various offerings and activities, including the chance to try local foods, socialize with residents and learn about ethnic folk culture.
