Tongban hamlet, located in remote mountainous area of Rong'an county in Guangxi, was once an "empty village" with only six elders living. Thanks to the support of local authorities, more and more people who had worked outside the hamlet chose to return to develop sightseeing tourism at their hometown in the past years. In 2018, Tongban was lifted out of poverty.

Wuying village is a Miao ethnic-minority hamlet that nestles snugly in the towering mountains stretching across the border between Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and Guizhou province. The whole village shook off poverty in 2020, despite its barren lands, harsh natural environment and inconvenient transportation.

In recent years, Tongban hamlet and Wuying village have made joint efforts in the fields of culture, rural tourism, etc to promote rural vitalization for further development.

Wu Qi, founder of Paw for Heal, a volunteer program established in 2012 that uses therapy dogs, said there are about 300 such animals in China. Some 95 percent of them live with their owners and are put to work when their services are requested.

Each dog must undergo a thorough training program and international-standard tests before becoming a certified therapy dog. Wu, 38, said that the animals have provided help for at least 100 institutions.

Therapy dogs have been introduced in more than 10 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, and Xiamen, Fujian province. By the end of this year, they are expected to start work in another 10 cities, and their total number is expected to rise to 1,000, Wu said.

"By providing such a service, we hope to raise awareness among more people that dogs are more than just companions for their owners at home. They can go out into society to play a certain role for individuals in need," Wu added.

The cradle of China's Science and Technology Backyard — a program under which university students can use their knowledge to help solve problems in agriculture in rural areas — was recently inaugurated in Quzhou county of Handan, Hebei province.

The Baizhai Science and Technology Backyard was founded by Beijing-based China Agricultural University in Quzhou in 2009. In the "backyard" — several rural style houses with a yard in Gaozhuang village of Baizhai town — professors and graduate students from the university have continued their research.

Working with farmers, they carry out research activities that center on technology transfer and enable small holders to achieve higher returns with better environmental stewardship, according to an article published in the journal Nature in 2016 by related professors and students.

Since the beginning of the program, the university has developed 139 Science and Technology Backyard projects in 24 provincial-level regions across the country, according to Xinhua News Agency.
