With the fast approaching of the Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year, Hehong village in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, has offered fun for residents and visitors with a collection of traditional activities.

Home to more than 50 residents of age 80 and above, Hehong village in Ninghai county has been billed as the city's "longevity village". With a 1,000-year history, it is also a focal point for traditional Chinese culture and food. Changshougao, or longevity cake, a glutinous rice delicacy, is a specialty.

Hair accessories in traditional Chinese style were created by Zhou Yutong. [Photos provided to chinadaily.com.cn]



In the past two years, Zhou Yutong, a fan of traditional Chinese fashion, made more than 300 hairpins and other hair accessories.



They're colored in blue, gold, red and green, with dozens — sometimes hundreds — of beads decorated with feathers and pearls and taking different shapes.

"I became interested in making the hairpins out of my love of traditional Chinese clothing," said Zhou, a graduate of Lanzhou University in Gansu province.

Wearing the clothes and hairpins she makes is the leisure activity Zhou enjoys most with her friends.

"The first hairpin I made is a light blue one with a row of petals. The craftsmanship was not good at that time, and sometimes the line of the beads and petals was not straight," she said.

Making hair accessaries requires patience and technique.

In a year, Zhou started to sell her products on the internet, and began to receive orders.

As part of the fashion history reflecting the trendy shifts over recent century, a total of 143 sets consisting of 938 vintage brooches and related accessories have recently been on display at the Tsinghua University Art Museum in Beijing.

Titled Imprint: Vintage Costume Jewelry of the 20th Century, the exhibition has also showcased more than 50 posters, designing drafts and books about the vintage brooches created between 1920s and 1990s.

All the exhibits are selected from collections from the vintage costume jewelry collector Zheng Yingyan.

On the knowledge-sharing service Zhihu, Zheng introduced that the origin of brooches can be traced back to the flint buckles used for wearing animal skin-made aprons in the Neolithic Age and the earliest brooches that were used as decorations appeared in the Bronze Age.

With more development in recent centuries, brooches have secured a distinctive seat in the family of jewelries, and have even played an important role in some influential events, according to the exhibition organizers.
