These photos below taken on Feb. 19, 2025 shows Buddhist statues in Nankan grottoes scenic spot in Bazhou District of Bazhong City, southwest China's Sichuan Province. Nankan grottoes, known for its 179 carved grottoes which house over 2,700 painted Buddhist statues, is a tourist attraction in Bazhong City.
The carving of the grottoes began in the Sui Dynasty (581-618). The statues here are rich in content, exquisite in shape, bright in color and well preserved. (All photos by Xinhua/Zhang Yawen/Liu Kun)

Sunday was the day for students of Guanzhaiwan Primary School in Puli township of Xuanwei city, Southwest China's Yunnan province, to report for the new semester. Children from Nizhuhe village packed their bags and set off for school. What sets them apart from other students is their mode of transportation.
Nizhuhe village is a small hamlet nestled in a deep valley carved by the Nizhu River meandering from south to north. In the past, the villagers' shortest route from the valley floor to the mountaintop was a perilous cliffside path, a journey that took nearly six hours for a round trip. Children and their parents living here had to make this arduous trek at least once every ten days.
In 2022, a significant change came to this challenging journey. A local scenic area along the Nizhu River was officially completed and began operations. A 268-meter-high sightseeing elevator and a cable car system were put into use, offering free access to the villagers of Nizhuhe and nearby areas. This provided the children with a direct "cloud shuttle" to the mountaintop.
Nowadays, thanks to the sightseeing shuttle vehicles, elevator and cable cars of the scenic spot, the children's journey to school was shortened to just half an hour.

At the age of 22, Wang Xun (1915-69), then a student at Tsinghua University, published an essay titled The Value of Jade in Chinese Culture, in which he investigated the philosophical, cultural and aesthetic meanings embodied in jade.
It was written during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), when Wang and his teachers and schoolmates were forced to move from place to place to escape the invaders. The young philosophy major was determined to commit himself to the research of Chinese art history and aesthetics.
For decades afterward, he taught fine arts at his alma mater, and later at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he wrote about his findings and was involved in designs to integrate aesthetic traditions with modern crafts.
An exhibition now on at the Tsinghua University Art Museum, For the Revival of Chinese Art, introduces Wang's academic, educational and design accomplishments, which he hoped would continue the country's cultural lineage and encourage his students to feed hearts and minds with their own artistic practice.
