This photo taken on Feb 10, 2025 shows the colored lanterns made by Mai Haijie at his studio in Beijing. Regarded as a symbol of auspicious and harmony, viewing colored lanterns to celebrate the Lantern Festival is one of the traditional activities on the fifteenth day of the first month on the Chinese lunar calendar. In 2008, colored lantern (including Beijing colored lantern) was included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list. [All photos by Photo/Xinhua]

Born in 1974 in a family of lantern makers, Ma Haijie has been learning traditional techniques such as cutting samples, mixing paste and coloring from his grandfather and mother since he was a child. His family began to make lanterns in the Qing Dynasty, with the founder Huang Yuzhang, Ma Haijie's great-grandfather.

In recent years, Ma Haijie has also integrated bamboo weaving techniques in the production of lanterns in southern China with the production techniques of colored lanterns in Beijing, forming a unique style of lantern art.

Lately, Ma Haijie has volunteered to carry out teaching activities for schools and communities in Beijing, and has provided free training for disabled people for them to make a living.

In Yunhe, a mountainous county in Zhejiang province, wooden toys are more than just playthings — they are the lifeblood of the community. Among Yunhe's 126,300 residents, about one in four works in the wooden toy industry or related fields.

Wooden toys, which include blocks, puzzles, trains and educational tools, only account for 5.6 percent of China's toy market in 2023, according to Zhiyan Consulting, a Chinese market research company.

Yet, Yunhe's wooden toy industry had an impressive output value of 6.69 billion yuan ($915 million) in 2023. The county produces 40 percent of the world's wooden toy supply, with over 70 percent of its products exported to 82 countries and regions.

Azamat Adalbek is a skilled snowboarder. However, the 16-year-old from Altay prefecture in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region knows he still has a long way to go before he becomes a fur skiing pro like his father and uncle, and Azamat had been looking forward to owning a pair of fur skis tailor-made for him by his father.

The teenager's wish was fulfilled when he returned home to Meilifeng village at the foot of the Altay Mountains in January for his school's winter break. Heavy snowfall during the long winter, which often lasts from late October to early April, had created a fairytale-like atmosphere in the village of herdsmen from the Kazak ethnic group.
