Xing Hui (front), an engraver and painter of Jieshou painted pottery, demonstrates her techniques at the painted pottery museum in Tianying Township of Jieshou City in east China's Anhui Province, May 29, 2024. The making of Jieshou painted pottery can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

Tianying Township in Jieshou City of east China's Anhui Province was the main production site of Jieshou painted pottery in history. The technique of making Jieshou painted pottery was inscribed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

To inherit and revive the technique, the local inheritors have innovated the shape and carving patterns to meet the demand of modern society. The cultural and creative products designed by these inheritors are also favored by consumers.

Nowadays, Tianying Township not only remains as a production place of Jieshou painted pottery, but also accommodates a museum for displaying potteries and a base for inheriting and reviving intangible cultural heritage, which makes the township a popular destination for study tours.

Instead of being a local-made handicraft, the Jieshou painted pottery is integrated into school courses, decorations in parks, and museum exhibits. The ancient Jieshou painted pottery is reviving in modern time. (Jieshou Integrated Media Center/Handout via Xinhua)

The Yingge dance, or "dance to the hero's song," is a form of folk dance popular in south China's Guangdong Province that merges opera, dance, and martial arts. Dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), this traditional dance is often performed during traditional Chinese festivals. The Yingge dance was listed as the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

In April 2024, videos of a 5-year-old girl, Zhuang Enqi, performing the Yingge dance and interacting with a troupe of Yingge dancers garnered millions of views online.

Zhang Zixuan (behind) and Xie Suqian, pupils of the "little Kunqu Opera training class" of Shipai Center Primary School, perform Kunqu Opera in Kunshan City, east China's Jiangsu Province, May 31, 2024.(Xinhua/Li Bo)

In a training room of Shipai Center Primary School in Kunshan City, pupils practice basic skills of Kunqu Opera under the guidance of a full-time teacher. All the maneuvers are presented precisely.

Kunshan City is the birthplace of the Kunqu Opera, which is listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an intangible cultural heritage. The city established its first "little Kunqu Opera training class" at a local primary school in 1992. Currently, there are over 20 such opera classes in the city, with more than 5,000 pupils trained.

The "little Kunqu Opera training class" at Shipai Center Primary School enrolls nearly 80 pupils annually. The training difficulty is divided into low, medium, and high grades based on the age of the pupils.

Besides participating in regular trainings twice a week, the pupils utilize their break time to practice Kunqu Opera as well. As an old saying goes, "One minute on stage results from 10 years of practice off stage," the pupils make progress by numerous repetitive trainings which often require substantial perseverance.

In Miaoxi Primary School, there is a band with eight children, seven of whom are left-behind children, and the youngest is only 9 years old. Half a year ago, this remote rural primary school began to recruit volunteers with artistic talents, and Wen Jin, a music volunteer who runs a musical instrument shop, came to Miaoxi Primary School to teach music. Every Tuesday, Wen Jin would drive an hour and a half from the city through mountain roads to give music lesson to students. Thanks to the power of music, children in Miaoxi Primary School become more cheerful and confident. (Xinhua/Chen Zeguo)
