Meng Rongda, 59, is the only teacher of a "mini-school," more precisely a teaching site in Xishan Township of Congjiang County. At present, there are 23 preschool students and 17 pupils in the first and second grades.







Besides Chinese and math, Meng is also responsible for physical education (PE) and music courses to ensure rural children can also attain a sound basic education.

Meng has been working as a teacher, cook and caretaker at the mini-school since 2015 in the landlocked mountainous areas. Lhamo Tsering, a resident in Lhasa, Xizang autonomous region, said her neighbors like to use pressure cookers made in the region, as they make food preparation easier and safer.

"Last year, people could buy these pressure cookers for only 100 or 200 yuan ($14 to $28) because they receive a subsidy from the government. The regular price at a store is more than 800 yuan," she said.

With an average altitude of 4,000 meters, Xizang is known as the "roof of the world". But the high altitude means there's less atmospheric pressure than at lower elevations, so water boils at a cooler temperature. Water at sea level boils at 100 C, but in Xizang the boiling point is only around 85-90 C, which is not efficient for cooking. Also, it may not be hot enough to kill food-borne bacteria. Foods such as meat, for example, should be heated to around 116 C, experts say.

Pressure cookers — special pots with airtight lids — are used to contain heated air and steam, and the added pressure raises water's boiling temperature. Basically, the interior of such a pot simulates higher air pressures at lower altitudes, so they are often relied upon for faster and more convenient cooking.

The China Millennium Monument in Beijing hosted the 2024 Art Night and opening ceremony for the 7th Traditional Craft Revival Exhibition on Friday.





The exhibition comprised 16 display areas, each presenting different forms of traditional crafts, including plant dyeing and pottery-making from Qinzhou in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

Apart from the exhibition, the Art Night merged lantern displays, market stalls, hands-on intangible cultural heritage experiences, performances and fashion runways.

Inheritors of intangible cultural heritage were invited to give live craft demonstrations, such as paper-cutting, shadow puppetry and snuff bottle painting.





The Art Night also served as a promotional platform for many Chinese cities, which showcased their regional culture through special food tastings and music and dance performances.

Air China will officially deploy its first C919 aircraft on two domestic routes on Wednesday, one from Beijing Capital International Airport to Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport ,and the other, from Beijing to Hangzhou.
