More than 100 sets of obstacles have been placed along the routes, and the contestants need to maintain their balance while also performing at quick speeds. Whoever reaches the destination quickest is crowned the winner.

There is also a separate race held to judge the contestants' parkour skills, where they are given scores by a panel of judges on how well they can perform a parkour routine, which often includes kong vault, lache, palm spin, side flips and the wall run.

It is the third time the competition is being held at the Tianmenshan Scenic Area. The unique terrain makes the competition more challenging and breathtakingly exciting.

Girls compete in a basketball game in Horqin Right Wing Middle Banner in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region on Friday. The game and the construction of the basketball court were part of a new NBA charity initiative, Her Time to Play. PROVIDED TO CHINA DAILY
On Friday afternoon, at a remote school over 70 kilometers from Horqin Right Wing Middle Banner in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, an exciting girls' basketball game got underway.

Playing on a brand-new outdoor basketball court, the air was filled with a continuous, sharp squeak from the friction of the girls' sneakers gripping the colorful playing surface.

What made the game particularly special, though, was the presence of retired NBA star Robert Horry, tossing the ball high into the air to start the game, while Chinese basketball legends Mengke Bateer and Zheng Haixia looked on from the sidelines, coaching the two teams.

This event, along with the construction of the new court, is part of a recently launched charity initiative called Her Time to Play, under the auspices of NBA Cares, the National Basketball Association's global social responsibility program.

The initiative seeks to support the holistic development of young female students in underdeveloped regions through a range of strategies, such as upgrades to sports facilities in rural schools, basketball skills training programs and the organization of basketball matches among local schools and communities.

From Aug 20 to 22, 41 physical education teachers from schools throughout Horqin Right Wing Middle Banner participated in professional basketball training led by NBA international youth development expert Bryan Gamroth. The training sessions included instruction on fundamental basketball skills, physical fitness and testing, sports psychology and healthy eating.

Drawing her inspiration from nature, 60-year-old Li Shuying from the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, breathes new life to birch bark by crafting them into vivid animals, ancient Chinese beauties and breathtaking landscape paintings.

From Bailang town in Arxan city of the region's Hinggan League — an area famous for its lush birch forests — Li has created artworks with birch bark for decades. She collects the bark from dead birch trees or those that fall naturally, cuts the bark into shapes and creatively pieces them together.

Dong Guirong teaches students winding techniques on agate gemstones in Xin Barga Right Banner, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, in August last year. CHINA DAILY

Despite being partially sighted, Dong Guirong has not only made a living from spotting precious gemstones in the dusty soil of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, she's gone on to become a successful agate jewelry maker.

"My right eye was hurt in an accident when I was 6. My family didn't have much money for treatment, which meant that from middle school my vision was permanently blurred," she said.

In solidarity with her humble beginnings, the 54-year-old from the region's Xin Barga Right Banner in Hulunbuir is today plowing her efforts into providing opportunities for local people who may face adversity.

"Gemstones are results of volcanic eruptions, and are like gifts from nature," she said. "I hope the agate pieces that I've designed can help young people with disabilities erupt with inspiration."
