A fire in a hospital in Taiwan's New Taipei City has caused heavy casualties, authorities said Monday.

At least 9 killed, 16 injured after a hospital in New Taipei City, southeast China's Taiwan, caught fire on Monday morning. The fire has been put out and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The fire in Taipei Hospital also left three people in a coma and another nine people injured as of 8 am, according to the local fire department, which received a fire alarm at 4:36 am Monday.

According to the department, the fire started in a patient ward on the seventh floor. There were 32 patients on the floor at the time. Local residents reportedly heard loud bangs.

The fire was extinguished at 5:27 am, after 76 vehicles and 208 firemen were sent to the rescue.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

TAIPEI — Nine people died and another 16 were injured after a fire at a hospital in New Taipei City, local authorities said on Monday.

"We are pained by the accident and express our condolences to our Taiwan compatriots who lost their lives, to the bereaved families and to the injured," said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.

The fire started on a seventh-floor ward at Taipei Hospital at around 4:30 am on Monday. There were 33 patients on the floor at the time, most aged over 50.

Eighteen people were injured after a magnitude-5 earthquake jolted southwest China's Yunnan province Monday morning, local authorities have said.

The quake affected more than 48,000 residents in the counties of Tonghai and Huaning and the district of Jiangchuan, all administered by the city of Yuxi, damaging over 6,000 homes, according to a statement from the provincial civil affairs department.

Ten years ago, Li Qiang arrived in Nanjing from Shenyang to do costume designing instead of working in a central enterprise.

Now, Li is busy with taking photos of his designs to New York Fashion Week. Late last year, he received the invitation to show his works at the event this September.

When Li was a child, most of his clothes were made by his mother, which made him interested in sewing and then in becoming a costume designer, Li Qiang said.

Li is diligent and works until late night.

As Li earned a reputation among the fashion circle, some famous Chinese people, including traditional crosstalk performer Guo Degang, TV host Meng Fei and boxing champ Zou Shiming, became his clients.
