XI'AN - Xi'an, one of the oldest cities in China and home to the world-famous Terracotta Army, opened its first subway line on Friday, taking a major step toward building itself into a metropolis in the country's relatively undeveloped western region.
Xi'an's Subway Line 2, the first subway line to open in northwest China, went into operation at noon Friday, five years after construction on the line began. The line runs north-south across the ancient city, passing the Ancient City Wall and Bell Tower historical sites.
The subway line currently runs just over 20 km in length, but will eventually be expanded to a length of 26.3 km, according to Zhang Jianzheng, secretary-general of the provincial government.

Wreckage salvaged after coach plunge kills 16 in central China

YICHANG, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The coach wreckage was retrieved out of water on Monday after the coach plunged into a ravine in central China's Hubei Province Saturday afternoon, leaving at least 16 people dead and another 19 injured.
No more casualties were found inside the wreckage when it was lifted out of water in the county of Xingshan County, Yichang City, rescuers said.
According to the GPS system loaded on the coach, the speed of the coach was 40 km per hour at 2:37 p.m. before it was found disappeared from the positioning system.
Some passengers were saved as they were thrown out of the damaged coach before its plunge, local witnesses said.
Zhang Xinzhen, chairperson of the coach owner Jiuzhou Tour Coach Company of Jingzhou City, said as the driver was on board with his families and friends for private picnic, the passenger list was not known by the company.
According to a passenger list provided by the local, the victims includes one person from Macao Special Administrative Region and one from Brunei. Such list has not been verified by official authorities yet.
The coach, with 35 people on board, plunged into the river dozens of meters below the highway.
Fourteen people were killed at the scene and two died later in hospital. Among the injured, eight were in serious condition.
Further investigation is under way.

NANJING - Eleven workers were confirmed dead and one remained missing after melted iron spilled over a refining furnace Wednesday morning in east China's Jiangsu Province.
Another worker was injured after the accident occurred at around 11:45 a.m at the Nanjing Iron and Steel Group Co. Ltd., a company spokesman said, adding that the injury was not life threatening.
Thirteen workers were preparing at the No.5 furnace for the shutdown of the furnace, when the accident occurred, according to the spokesman.
The cause of the accident is being investigated. The search for the missing worker is underway.
The draft resolution, presented by Britain, France, Germany and Portugal, won nine votes in favor, two against and four abstentions on Tuesday.
