LUOYANG, Henan - Police have detained four women who were allegedly kept as sex slaves in a secret dungeon.

The women, aged 16 to 24, were discovered imprisoned in a cellar underneath an old residential community early this month. Detectives also found the bodies of two other women in a shallow grave.

"We're still investigating the case," was all Wang Haifeng, a spokesman for Luoyang city's public security bureau, would say on Friday. He refused to comment on whether the women are suspected of killing the others.

Li Hao, a 34-year-old worker at the city's quality supervision bureau, is accused of kidnapping six women and keeping them as sex slaves in a purpose-built dungeon for two years.

He killed two after they attempted to fight back, authorities said.

Police in a southern city of Henan province detained Li on Sept 3. He is said to have fled Luoyang when one of his hostages escaped.

After raising the alarm on Sept 6, the escapee told police she was released from the dungeon so Li could force her to have sex with other men, saying it was something he did when he needed money.

According to media reports, Li spent about two years digging two small rooms 4 meters beneath a basement before abducting the women, who all worked at nightclubs and karaoke bars.

Police say the women may be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome - when hostages start to sympathize with their captors.

Li lives with his wife, 24, and their 1-year-old child.

"We can't imagine this," said Kou Yongxue, a resident who lives in the building above the dungeon. "This is too cruel to believe. Neighbors are still shuddering at this."

The case has led to waves of discussion online, while the reporter who broke the story has even accused local authorities of trying to cover up the grizzly discovery because the prime suspect works in the local quality supervision authority.

Ji Xuguang of Southern Metropolis Daily said on Thursday he was "threatened" and interrogated by officials about his source.

"They asked me who tipped me off and said I was revealing a 'State secret'," the journalist wrote on his micro blog, along with a picture of two men he claims were city officials.

Authorities denied claims of an attempted coverup.

In a phone interview with China Daily on Thursday night, Ji said he was trying to protect himself by posting the message, adding that he has left the province due to safety concerns.

Protests spur end of dog-meat fest
Created: 2011-9-21 0:51:44, Updated: 2011-9-21 1:08:03

A traditional dog meat festival with a 600-year history of slaughtering and tasting dogs in Zhejiang Province has been canceled after outrage and protests from tens of thousands of animal-rights activists.

The annual three-day-long festival was planned for October 18 in Hutou Village of Jinhua City, where 5,000 to 10,000 dogs would be butchered on the streets and served to villagers on dining tables.

Participants in past festivals described horrific scenes they called "doomsday for dogs," when dogs were kept in cages with their eyes scratched out and their mouths wrapped up by iron wires, waiting for customers to pick them up and get slaughtered in front of hundreds of other dogs.

"People actually enjoyed killing them in various ways at the festival," wrote Wang Lingyi, an animal-welfare volunteer from Hangzhou. "I've seen the dogs being stabbed, strangled and even beaten into comas and thrown into boiling water. Some dogs woke up in the extremely hot water and they struggled, but the vendors kept pushing them, plucking their fur."

"On those days, the streets were washed by blood while the air was filled by dogs' desperate howls," said an online participant who posted pictures and videos.

A campaign to boycott the coming festival was started by animal-rights activists last week on several online platforms. On Weibo.com, a call for residents to put an end to the slaughterers' festival was forwarded 55,000 times in one day.

"The government called it a traditional festival, but we know they are only attracting vendors into the city to boost economy," Shen Sheng from Jiangsu Province wrote in an open letter to netizens. "Although the laws are still lacking to protect the animals, we will not allow them to carry out such a massacre under our eyes."

Jinhua city officials told Shanghai Daily yesterday that the festival was canceled due to the online outrage. They acknowledged that such a festival is no longer needed after continuing since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

According to an official surnamed Zhang, the decision was made on Monday evening after a heated discussion among government officials and village representatives. But it was no easy task persuading everyone that a 600-year-old tradition should be axed, she said.

"Some villagers argued that they had emotional attachments to the festival, as it had been passed from generation to generation, while some said it should be listed as the city's cultural heritage," said Zhang.

The habit of dog eating in Jinhua can be traced to a Ming Dynasty legend. A general tried to lead his army to strike the city late at night, but failed several times because whenever they got close to the city, dogs would bark to raise the alarm. The general decided to kill all the dogs in the region and the troops finally conquered the city, and they celebrated by eating the dogs they slaughtered.

Thanks for the news clip Schumacher. I have dilemma argument with this. Although dog meat is and still consume in many Asian countries and I don't want it to be banned just to appease the someone else's view of "civilized behavior" in adapting to that popular value. Yes, I've eaten a dog and a cat before, that doesn't make me an animal hater or anti dog or anti cat in any shape or form. I DO LIKE to see all animals that are legally consume to be butchered in a more sensible manner (quick death) instead of some sick side show of gore entertainment. The Australians ate kangaroos that are domesticated like the one's in China for dogs, so where are the outcry news for that? As for the record, yes I've tried a kangaroo burger before here in Houston and tasted kinda like beef but a little gamy. So my argument is that I DON'T want popular views to dictate society on what's best for us to consume.

As I commented, I called for laws against cruelty to all animals, not just dogs, including how they're killed in the abattoir.
So I have nothing against eating dog meat per se. But I also wouldn't lose any sleep if they do ban dog/kangaroo/whale meat etc tomorrow. People can cry about unfairness all they want but I think we have far more serious forms of unfairness in the world to worry about.
They can even ban beef/pork/poultry, as dairy/eggs products can provide plenty of good protein. But of course that's not likely as far far more people rely on beef/pork/poultry.

I agreed, just kill it and don't frill with it, as far as butchering animals for meat.

Don't forget fish and shell fish as well, we Asians love our sea food.

Re: Chinese Daily Photos, Videos & News!!

Hate to break the news to it, but popeye, Schumacher, that "Saving dogs campaign" has been proven another scam to those who have a too kind heart.

It started as a news leaked at Weibo that some truck carrying some 500 captured homeless dogs on the way to butcher, and "call to arms" that everyone to intercept and liberate those dogs, they successed, but in the end have to pay a "market price" for all the dogs to the owner... turns out, it was an commercial (the "call to arms" part) that the owner conducted to sell the dogs at first place.

Then several dozens of similiar campaigns has been waged untill people had it enough, found out the smart ass commercial campaign.

This one, the one Schumacher quoted, I bet money on it that it is a campaign to promote tourism. I myself never know this "600 years tradition of dog eating festive", not to mention "let's have a look how dogs are being butchered and cooked", now it is well known is it?

To be fair, I myself don't care how much and how the way the turckys being butchered and cooked all around the world while anyone can set up a campaign "turckys are our friends, don't eat them!", the point is, if some "live stock" are to be butchered, the people in this business should do it efficiant enough that "kill, but not torture"; and people out of this business should leave it, unless the "torture" part has reached a significant point that human moral has been disrupted by such conduct (like hunt whale TO EXTINCTION).

And yes, we should spend more time and energy on human matters. And I am glad that China do not waste time and resources on RITE of human rights when human junks are involved.
