Building construction quality in China is worrying. Seems like "tofu dreg" constructions only got worse in recent years. People bypass safety just to save a tiny bit of cash.

Most buildings that are collapsing are built before the safety regulations were introduced. Also lot of these collapse happen in Western part of China, were local funding isn't high. Your not going to get the same safety standards in less populated places compared to major cities.

Ah ha.. there's the rub. It should be standard or very similar all across China.

It's not only buildings collapsing it's bridges. Go back through this thread you shall see what I mean.

A prisonbreak was officially confirmed on Sept 13 by the Hebei No 3 Prison in Shenzhou city, North China's Hebei province, the Beijing News reported Wednesday.

An unnamed official from the prison confirmed on the phone that a breakout did happen on Sept 11, 2011 and they were hunting the escaped prisoners. Most of the prisoners confined in the jail are serious criminal offenders.

The official denied the death of any prison guards during the breakout and did not release the number of escaped prisoners or other details.

However, a resident of Gaoguzhuang village near the jail saw a lot of armed police officers suddenly appear on the land surrounding the prison and at nearby roads to check passing vehicles on the morning of Sept 11.

Some villagers said the breakout may have happened at 4 am that morning.

There's a difference between building codes and building standards. Each county have different codes for safety in accordance to natural elements of it's location, just like here in America where the IBC (International Building Codes), UBC (Universal Building Codes) and NBC (National Building Codes) are used to varies among the common natural occurrences like hurricanes, typhoons, and earthquakes. Building standards are more like a fire code or an escalator codes that does more with egress of the building. Ok with that said, my worries is about China building so fast, that it put a huge amount of stress for the code inspectors out there, that might bypass certain safety codes that's been implemented along the codes the government already put into place. I think China just needs to hire more building inspectors and code analysis, even just on a part-time basis would really help, because right now all their best engineers and architects are busy at work.
