On June 10, local police found a teenage boy living in a makeshift tree house by the roadside in the city of Jinjiang, Fujian Province. The boy has been trying to make a living selling bottles and other salvaged items to recycling centers.
According to the owner of a recycling center, the boy is about 15 or 16 years old and is physically weak due to long-term malnutrition. The recycling center owner said the boy comes to her establishment every month to sell salvaged items and materials worth 30 to 40 yuan (US$4.9 to US$6.4). The boy is currently staying at the local police station because he doesn’t meet the requirements to be housed at a local rescue shelter.
