Meng Guixin (2nd R) transports water at Nongyong Village of Bansheng Township in Dahua Yao Autonomous County, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Feb. 28, 2015. Situated at the center of the Karst landforms in west Guangxi, Bansheng Township suffers from severe water deficit for ages. Rainfall therefore is a blessing for people living on this land for about 1,000 years, who are mainly of the Yao ethnic group. To meet their daily life needs, the local people always collect rainwater with all sizes of buckets and barrels, as well as roofs of their houses. In the past decade, the local government has been managing the water deficit through building water tanks and returning farmlands to forests on the mountains. It is a tradition that young man and woman of the Yao ethnic group build a water tank for their parents before they leave family and get married. Five water tanks of 300 cubic meters for each are under construction at Nongyong village. According to the statistics, a total of 2,462 water tanks have been built in Dahua by the end of 2014, which help to ease water shortage and provide safe drinking water for the local people.
