"the ratio of applicants to actual admittance is only 123:1." That probably explains it. o_O

Yep! The Beijing Film academy is one of the few elite film academies in China. If you get in, you have one foot in the door to becoming a super star. And given the massive movie / TV market in China, you will be on the way to become a multi-millionaire in less than 10 years. talk about pressure...

I guess they are just nervous... If they can pass the exam and get into the college, they will have a chance to become a super star. If they can't, they will most likely be a nobody. Well, less than nobody since most of these students don't have a good academic record. Most of them would be lucky to pass any kind of tests/quizzes in school. So if they can't get into the film school, they won't be able to get into any school... And that is bad...

Ok.. how do we know they can't get into another school?..is it that hard? I do know a little about the entrance exams for college in China.

I believe the exam they are taken will be ONLY for that particular school. If they want to go to a normal college, than they will take another type of exam for that.

Actually, they have to take two separate tests for these "artsy schools": one test specific for the kind of college they want to get in (you need to pass music tests if you want to get in a music college or some kind of acting tests for film schools) and the other general one that every high school senior has to take. The special test is usually early, like now in this case. Those who pass the special test will also have to take the general college entrance test in June/July (not sure about the exact time...). For them to formally get into the college, they will need to pass both tests.

And for Popeye, the admission cut-off line for the general test is typically A LOT lower for artsy school than normal colleges. How low? Hypothetically, out of a total of 700 points, you will need >600 to get into top-notch colleges in China (Harvard-, MIT- level), and ~300 to get into an artsy school. And many now-famous movie/TV stars complain how hard it was for them to pass that cut-off line. And for those who could not get into film schools, the usual reason is that they couldn't pass the 300-point cut-off line... That is IF they have passed the first round of specialized test that is taking place now. If they don't pass this one, then the only chance they would have for college would be to get in a regular 4-year university. Then they would be considered as regulars and would have to compete with those who can easily score 600 in the general test coming in the summer. They will have absolutely NO chance what-so-ever.
