A vender arranges flowers ahead of the Qixi Festival in Dali city, southwest China's Yunnan Province, Aug. 1, 2014. The Qixi Festival, also known as Chinese Valentine's day, which falls on Aug. 2 this year, originates from a folk tale about a fairy falling in love with a mortal. The marriage allegedly enraged the Goddess of Heaven, who created the Milky Way to separate them. Supposedly, the pair of lovers are reunited for a single night each year by magpies that fly into the heavens and form a bridge for them to cross. (Xinhua/Lin Yiguang)

Perhaps. It would give students and family members second thoughts about sending their children to USC.

This is not the first time this has occurred...remember that in 2012 two Chinese USC students were murdered.

USC should consider educating new students on taking reasonable security measures while off campus. Watts could be a dangerous area for people that look like students, so common sense and awareness of your surroundings go a long way to keep trouble at bay.

Sigh, this hurt the little guys the most. There are quite a bit of pictures circulated online where poor old peddler were in tears when they receive fake banknotes on item that they have sold. On top of the loss, they gave out real changes to people using fake money. A lot of people are starting to avoid using banknotes and use bankcard and credit card where it is accepted

In Nov 2013, a similar explosion Qingdao Hangdao District killed 52. In developed countries, vehicles with detection devices carry out checks to prevent such disasters.

Now I don't know about the Qingdao incident, but the one happened in Taiwan did have sensor in place. From what I have heard, it was a human error (You may want to check the news again, as I have not read it yet. I only heard the news from my sibling) The supplier of the gas did not own the pipe, but one of the industrial customer did own it. The supplier detected that there was a pressure lost and immediately shut the pipe down and notify the customer to fix it and have them notify the officials. The customer did not do what was asked and later on told the supplier that everything is fine and told them to re-activate the supplies. Later on, white smoke is coming out of the ground and exploded.

IMO no matter how sophisticated the sensors are for pipeline, there is always leakage that are preventable.
