This news about child trafficking in PRC is a little bit dated. The issue of child and human trafficking in PRC is murky at best. Don't think anyone is sure of the real extent of child/human trafficking in PRC.

40 arrested in China for child trafficking
Posted: 13 May 2011 1204 hrs

BEIJING : Police in China have arrested a gang of 40 people suspected of buying at least 22 children in the nation's southwest and trafficking them to a wealthier region, state press said on Friday.

The suspected trafficking ring allegedly bought young children -- 22 of them have so far been recovered -- in impoverished areas of Yunnan province and sold them in coastal Fujian province in the southeast, the Beijing Times said.

More than 200 police were involved in the Wednesday arrests that took place in the two provinces, it said.

Human trafficking remains a serious problem in China, with many sociologists blaming the nation's "one-child" family planning policy for fuelling the crime.

Wednesday's arrests come after an investigation was launched this week in the central province of Hunan into the suspected involvement of family planning officials in the abduction and sale of babies into overseas adoption.

According to state press reports, about 20 children were forcibly taken away from families who were allegedly in violation of the birth control policy, and put up for adoption abroad.

Under the "one-child" policy, aimed at controlling the world's largest population of 1.3 billion, people who live in urban areas are generally allowed one child, while rural families can have two if the first is a girl.

This has put a premium on baby boys, while baby girls are often sold off or abandoned as couples try for a male heir.

Cubical & Cage home residents in Hong Kong on May 20, 2011. Amid rising inflation many cage or cubicle home dwellers risk being subjected to rent increases despite paying a similar price per square foot as some of the city's luxury apartments. Inhabitants of the tiny units, usually around 60 square feet in size and costing around 3000 Hong Kong dollars (385 USD) for a three person family, can face waiting times of between five and ten years for public housing to become available during which time rental hikes of as much as 20 percent per year are not uncommon.

BEIJING - The Jiaolong, China's manned deep-diving submersible, will attempt a 5,000-meter dive in July following last year's successful 3,759-meter dive, a senior official said Friday.

Liu Cigui, head of the State Oceanic Administration (SOA), said the Ministry of Science and Technology and the SOA will choose an appropriate area for the manned dive.

The Jiaolong, designed to reach a depth of 7,000 meters, completed 17 dives in the South China Sea from May 31 to July 18 last year, with the deepest reaching 3,759 meters with three crew members on board.

It makes China the fifth country, following the United States, France, Russia and Japan, to have the technology to send a manned dive over 3,500 meters below sea level.

Liu revealed the plans for the 5,000-meter dive during a symposium on oceanic development in Beijing on Friday.

He also said China will launch its second marine remote sensing satellite, HY-2, at an appropriate time this year.

The Jiaolong vessel is the world's first manned vehicle designed to reach 7,000 meters below sea level and it can used in 99.8 percent of the world's sea areas, according to Xu Qinan, the vehicle's chief designer.
