Modern Sketch No 5 1934
Comics and cartoons were very popular in Shanghai in the 1920s and 30s. There were dozens of such publications in magazines. The major publication was called “Modern Sketch”. First published by Zhang Guangyu and Zhang Zhengyu in 1928, it changed its name from “Shanghai Sketch” to “Modern Sketch” in 1930. The journal gathered many outstanding comic artists, including Cai Ruohong, Zhang Ding, Zhang Leping, Lu Shaofei, Ye Qianyu, Ding Cong, etc...

This close-up portrait poster of Mao Zedong again takes the perspective from below to expand the glory of the leader. The image of Chairman Mao occupies two thirds of the entire picture, whereas the map accounts for the other one third. The painting of Chairman Mao is set off against the azure sky, the face and right hand of Mao appearing particularly big and strong. In the middle part of the picture, Chinese people of all ethnic groups are welcoming the first Five-Year Plan for the years 1953 to 1957 with warm applause. The Chinese map in the hand of Chairman Mao records the major projects of the first Five-Year Plan. The poster is by Zhang Biwu, formerly a famous calendar artist, which is reflected in the style the people are painted

The title of this poster is rather obscure and unusual. In a self-reflective manner, the poster features an artist, who is wielding a paintbrush to depict a flourishing future of the modern People’s Commune. Hydropower stations, high voltage towers, and mechanized farming have now been introduced to the countryside. Since 1958, the general party line of “Greater, Faster, Better, Cheaper” and the establishment of the People’s Commune were promulgated in the Great Leap Forward campaign. This content and the combining of Soviet style socialist realism with abstract and decorative make this picture a good example of the Revolutionary Romanticism propagated at the time.
