The rat, which weighed six pounds and had a 12-inch tail, was caught at the weekend in a residential area of Fuzhou, a city of six million people on China's south coast.

The ratcatcher, who was only named as Mr Xian, said he swooped for the rodent after seeing a big crowd of people surrounding it on the street.

He told local Chinese newspapers that he thought the rat might be a valuable specimen, or a rare species, and had to muster up his courage before grabbing its tail and picking it up by the scruff of its neck.

"I did it, I caught a rat the size of a cat!" he shouted out afterwards, according to the reports. Mr Xian is believed to still be in possession of the animal, after stuffing into a bag and departing the scene.

The local forestry unit in the city identified the nightmarish creature as a bamboo rat from initial photographs, but said that it would need to examine the rat more closely before making a final identification.

Good Lord was it dead? My gosh not even D-Con could kill that thing!

Since there was no mention of him killing it, it should be alive. Apparently he was very curious about such an unusually large rat.

Yikes! that is an actual rat!!! often times people confused rats with capybara but this one looks like a good old fashion RAT!!!!

Either way I wouldn't touch that thing with my bare hands. It might have rabies and other nasty germs.

It doesn't even look like a possum (to me if seen from afar), therefore you know it's 100% pure rat. KILL IT...with a full 30 round clip AR-15 rifle until it stop twitching!

What?! You guys are wasting fire arm for that! With a stick, it's rather enough. I always catch mice with hands (with gloves, not bare hands) in my house. The bones of those mice are just as soft as they were made of ice-cream. You just use a little force on the mice, they die and blood come out everywhere. It's queasiness. If I encounter that big rat, whatever in my hands will be weapon, and it die for sure.

I just gotta admire your guts even with gloves. The teeth must be very sharp and you never know of any disease they could be carrying.

Chinese farmers have captured what is believed to be a metre-long rat that had been terrorising villagers and devouring fish whole, it is claimed.

They tried to cut the 5kg rodent up to eat - but broke two knives hacking at its thick bones and skin.

The monstrous animal, weighing ten times that of the average rat, was first spotted snatching 3kg fish from a pond in a village in Shaoyang, Hunan.

It was seen wading into the pond and dragging the large fish on to the shore, before swallowing them whole in its enormous jaws, according to local reports.

Local farmers to join forces in a bid to catch the beast, which had sparked terror among villagers.

They eventually cornered the rat, before killing it with makeshift weapons, reported shanghaiist.com.

Rat is traditionally eaten in Guangdong, southern China, where it can be served braised, stewed or cooked in soup. It can also be roasted and hung alongside duck.

The rodent, which can carry deadly diseases, is believed to be three times more nutritious than chicken.

In May, Shanghai was the subject of much controversy after rat meat was found to have been passed off as lamb.

More than 900 people were arrested during the scandal, according to figures released by the Ministry of Public Security.

Among those arrested were 63 people who had allegedly bought fox, mink, rat and other meat and processed it with additives like gelatin.

They had then sold the meat to farmers' markets in Shanghai and the Jiangsu province under the label of 'lamb', it was claimed.

In recent years, China has been criticised for its ongoing food safety scandals and lack of food regulation.

Scandals have ranged from milk contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine to rice crops contaminated with heavy metals, such as aluminum.
