My mother told me stories about how children as young as 8 years old in her village growing up were doing adult chores and stuff. The boys would either go out onto the field and started working (no school for the poor) from sunrise to sunset regardless of the weather, or go onto a fishing trip to work. That's why country kids grow up tend to be more rugged than city folks.

In this Jan. 8, 2013 photo released by China's Xinhua News Agency, Yu Zhengsheng, left, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, is greeted by a participant during a seminar held with Tibetan Buddhist representatives in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Sichuan Province. Yu visited Ganzi at the center of the self-immolations, urging Buddhist clergy to be patriotic and denouncing the Dalai Lama. Chinese authorities are responding to an intensified wave of Tibetan self-immolation protests against Chinese rule by clamping down even harder — criminalizing the suicides, arresting protesters' friends and even confiscating thousands of satellite TV dishes. A labourer works at a residential construction site in Shanghai January 18, 2013. China's economy regained speed in the final quarter of 2012, pulling out of a post-global financial crisis downturn that produced the slowest year of economic growth since 1999. Evidence of a burgeoning recovery in exports, stronger than expected industrial output and retail sales, together with robust fixed asset investment, all signalled that Beijing's pro-growth policy mix has gained sufficient traction to underpin a revival without yet igniting inflationary risks.
