"Signs taped to the walls from long ago are shown inside the Sam Wo restaurant in Chinatown in San Francisco, Friday, April 20, 2012. The 100-year-old Chinese restaurant known for having "the world's rudest waiter" is shutting its doors and serving its last customers Friday. "

100yr old restaurant has pedigree. By the look of it , it wouldnt have changed much since the first day it opened itas doors. Someone ought to have bought it and kept it going.

it never went out of style

An ethnic Kyrgyz sheep vendor holds a bundle of Chinese 100 yuan banknotes as he squats with his father while awaiting customers at a market in Aksu, Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region April 22, 2012.

David Ho, who has owned Sam Wo for the past 30 years, revealed this week that he could not afford to bring the building, with its precarious concrete balcony and idiosyncratic kitchen, up to health and safety standards. Come Saturday, the doors will be closed for good. The owners plan to appeal the health department's findings at a hearing next week, but they concede that reopening could prove too costly.

China is a major manufacturer of almost every goods conceivable be it original, under license or imitation BUT I've always wondered why they never got into cameras and consumer photography devices, equipment etc.
Are there even chinese branded cameras out there? If there are it sure isn't known outside of China for sure.

not that i know of, high end cameras/SLR is another field where expertise is highly guarded and hard to earn

if there is profit to it i'm sure Chinese producers can come up with something high end, but the market is dominated by Nikon and Canon. and noone will look to other brands, it always boil down to those two kings of the hill

why go out make your own brand and risk investment, while you already making profit manufacturing them

Thanks it was a most interesting read. I guessing after being in the business for 30yrs hes decided to quit. Had it been me I would have looked to relocate within Chinatown while maintaining the same ambience.Build the business up and then sell it.

Also when you are into SLR camera's you are looking for the most state of the art that your money can buy. China's not there yet with very high end stuff. Probably at least a couple of yrs behind Korea and Japan
