Chinese Company to buy Hummer brand from GM

If I remember the Chinese company making their Humvee look alike is located in Shenyang, so its not the same company.

But I see this as potential ground for the Chinese Humvee buyer to sue to the other, since the former now is the "legitimate" title holder.

That would really be interesting how the courts would handle it , also the other crowds pretty much established in the home market eh?

Chinese elites are certainly vain enough for it. There is plenty of market outside the US.

My figures could be wrong as Im going from memory but Humvee sales dropped from 57000 units to about half. and perhaps being Chinese owned and a aversion to big gas guzzlers decreasing sales might increase at a faster rates. Remember Lenovo's buyout of the IBM laptop hasn't been as successful as hoped. Do you think the Chinese Market can absorb nearly 30000 units to make up for it.

Wasn't there a report that the US military was dropping the Hummer because of their experience in Iraq? I thought they were already looking for a replacement suitable for that type of hostile environment.

It's called the Joint light tactical Vehicle program a joint Army/Marine program evaluating prototypes from Lockmart, Oshkosh/grumman and navstar/BAE
the program calls for a vehicle that come in three base weights A light jeep, a utility with some ballistic protection and then a up armored one. service entry some time in 2012

Lenovo's buyout of IBM certainly helped raising the quality of consumer product design in Lenovo/Legend products.

Good consumer product design is what China's industry lacks.

GM is willing to sell because the Hummer is a luxury brand that doesn't do well in current economic condition. If needed they can simply produce another big beefy vehicle later. If you think about it, very few people actually need big trucks, but they buy it to make a statement (or compensate something lacking).

Right now I think fuel efficiency is the big thing and I doubt any major automakers would sell their hybrid/electric technology. Several Chinese auto companies are making/developing hybrid/electric cars, and Warren Buffet was impressed enough to invest some $230 million USD in BYD:

I hope they don't mass produce it for civilian market without changing the gas guzzling features XD

The Hummer gives China an authentic brand of Car that it can produce itself (as opposed to joint productions). China would have full access to the Hummer's technologies and be able to to alter it for whatever purpose they may want. It may be for military use, but civilian use is thinkable as well if you consider existance of H1 and H2 (Hummer's former civilian use versions). A gas-efficient H could make a nice car for whoever fancies the name Hummer. Also, don't underestimate local production of a car. Germans use BMWs as their cabs :p

China's own brand of luxury class car up to now is... well... 'Red Flag'. Has anyone who isn't Chinese ever heard of that brand? My guess is 'no' XD.

I think this is another example of chinese emerging entrepreuneurs trying to explore new opportunities in the down turn. The deal could possibly speed up the management improvement and giving them solid tech knowhow for luxury heavy duty civilian cars. Come to think about it, BYD also venture to civ cars from battery manufacturing. Its too early to tell weather the company will fail, but they will have many huge obstacle ahead. best of luck to Tengzhong.
