BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- The LE500, the first Chinese general plane model to enter the African market, has completed a successful first flight in South Africa, China's Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC) said Monday.

Two LE500 planes, dubbed Little Eagle 500 in Chinese, have successfully conducted their first flights at a pilot training school in South Africa, said the state-owned aviation giant.

They will soon enter the local general aviation market as the standard for pilot training and other general aviation missions. This is the first time that a Chinese-developed general aircraft model has entered the African market.

The LE500 is a 4-to-5 seat plane developed by the AVIC General Aircraft Company (AVIC GENERAL). It is China's first domestically-developed light versatile aircraft to pass the CCAR Part-23 airworthiness test, a certified standard for small fixed-wing airplanes issued by Chinese civil aviation authorities.

The model is often used to train pilots, but can also be used for other general aviation activities such as aerial photography, sightseeing, tourism, and air patrol.

The LE500 has obtained South Africa's type airworthiness certificate (TAC), according to AVIC GENERAL.

To date, more than 80 LE500 planes have been delivered to domestic and overseas markets.

AVIC will send technical service and maintenance teams to support the smooth operation of LE500 planes in South Africa, as well as arrange pilot training and technical support to better serve local customers.

Moreover, AVIC plans to set up a South Africa-based service and support system for the plane, aiming to further promote the Chinese-developed aircraft and meet demands from local customers.

To date, China has delivered a total of 83 aircraft to African countries, including the MA60 series regional planes, Y-12 general planes, and LE500.

The development program for the narrowbody airliner is proceeding according to plan, COMAC said when announcing the latest flights. “Developmental test flights, static tests, and on the ground, post-sortie onboard tests and optimization are being carried out in an orderly manner,” the state manufacturer said.

has a flight-test base; the aircraft flew for 3 hr. 10 min. on June 22. Aircraft 102 is at Shanghai, the location of the program’s final assembly plant; its latest flight lasted 1 hr. 34. min.

Unit 101 has been modified on the ground and undergone strength calibration, COMAC said, without referring to the duration of the period of non-flying. Work also included modification and calibration of the water ballast system used in flight testing. For Unit 102, COMAC said such tasks as checks on stability control have been completed. That aircraft will shortly move to COMAC’s test base at Dongying, in the eastern province Shandong.

The third flight-test aircraft, among six planned, has been scheduled to fly this year. The wing has been joined to the body and airtightness has been checked, COMAC said, adding: “Cabling and onboard systems are being installed.”

In its June 22 statement, COMAC did not mention changes to the first two prototypes’ tails and flaps, which had been reported by two industry sources to ATW’s sister publication Aviation Week.

Discoveries during any development program’s flight testing routinely result in tweaks, interrupting progress. The C919 has spent relatively little time in the air since the first flight, however.

China's first domestically developed regional jet, the ARJ21, welcomed its 100,000th passenger on the second anniversary of its commercial operation on Thursday.

The Chengdu Airlines flight EU6665 took off from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport at 6:50am and landed at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport around noon with a stopover in Changsha in central Hunan Province. The airline incidentally is the first and only commercial operator of the 90-seater jet so far.

The flight marked two years of safe and smooth operation for the ARJ21, since it began commercial operations on June 28, 2016, according to Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC), the jet’s developer.

The 100,000th passenger was presented with a free return ticket on any routes being operated by ARJ21.

"The ARJ21 has been able to fly under all kinds of weather conditions stipulated by China's airworthiness regulation," COMAC announced on Thursday. Chengdu Airlines deploys the jet on eight routes between Chengdu in southwestern Sichuan Province and Shanghai as well as Wenzhou in neighboring Zhejiang Province and Nantong in eastern Jiangsu Province.

The 100,000th passenger of ARJ21 is presented with a free return ticket on any routes being operated by the jet.

The ARJ21 is designed to fly in conditions prevalent in China’s central and western regions. It can take off and land at nearly all the highland airports in the country. It can also fly in temperatures below minus 30 degrees Celsius, COMAC revealed.

Chengdu Airlines has trained 28 specialized pilots for ARJ21, along with 17 flight crew and 85 repairmen, the airline said on Thursday.

The ARJ21 has 78 to 90 seats and a range of up to 3,700 kilometers. The jet has so far secured 453 orders from 21 companies at home and abroad.
