China claims neutrality, but domestically the CCP parrots Putin's propaganda - Kiev is well aware of this. Also, USA kyboshed sale of Motor Sich, and I expect they would do similar with any AN-225 deal - even assuming such a deal is in the offing, which I highly doubt.
except China has leverage in the form of denying them access to Chinese products due to safety concerns, which would vastly increase the cost of sustaining life and rebuilding in Ukraine.

No way China is going to get AN-225. US will make sure China will not get this aircraft, especially the engines. Ukraine depends on US and NATO for its war with Russia. US can over-turn Ukraine's decision.

And to US, China is a bigger enemy than Russia, they are not going to let China to have any chance to study AN-225's engines, no matter how old these engines are.

The domestic media is irrelevant, do you expect them to look like they are on the same side as the US?

Also, Ukraine and China’s relationship was very good up to and including Poroshenko in spite of Russia’s feelings towards him.

Politics aside, I would throw a couple other theories
1. Just a deal between private parties for now
2. Publicity stunt by a Chinese company

Well for US I agree, but for Kiev's feeling about China here's what the Z man have to say himself:

Given the damage to the aircraft and its age. When they say Recycling, they mean recycling. Any scheme to “repair” would be cosmetic and never fly. Talk of a New one would be based on an unfinished airframe. Frankly this talk back and forth is completely unrealistic. It’s like talk of resurrecting the Buran. Might as well try refloating the Titanic. It’s a fantasy.

Ofc, but we should keep an eye cuz it might be a Chinese company that want to recycle it and some insight can stoll be gleamed from it (could be useful to make an even bigger y20 like plane say).
