I remember that long ago ( in the '70's? ) France bought a 60 000 ton press from the USSR which was then bigger than any press in the US. Also shortly after the C-5A was introduced in USAF service its peace time cargo load was reduced from 80 tons to 25 tons because the wings were too weak. Those presses are really important.

That monster press weighs only 8 tons?!!! That is definitely a typo.

Much, much more IMHO.

Hell my tube-icemaker is only about 1/100th the size of that thing and yet it ways almost 3 tons.

Where do you get the 8 tons? On the screenshoot stays "Ba Wan Dun", which means 80,000 tons.

I'm no expert in this manufacturing stuff, but my gut feeling tells me the tonnage refers to the amount of force it can apply onto the material, not its own weight.

A Forging press is the machine and it certainly does not weigh 80,000 tons otherwise it would have to be the size of a large aircraft carrier, 80,000 tons is the force the press can exert on the material it's working with

Even you can 3D print it. The quality of the landing gear will be not as good as forge pressing in terms of weight, strength.

LOL I was being sarcastic Lion...but basically yes that would be the reason why. Landing gears needs to be incredibly strong because of immense pressure exerted during landings especially hard landings.

They also have to be extremely robust as well because it's done repeatly over and over again not to mention critical. If a landing gear breaks or snaps during landing the potential for crash and burn is almost a certainty. You may survive if a tire blows or explodes but if a landing gear falls apart on landing it's bye bye birdie.
