And I wonder how many years more for that to happen...until China can produce engines that are in both quality and technology in-par with same generation competitors, Chinese aviation will just keep being laughed at and marginalized by everyone. China can design airframes as good as anyone else, but without good engines they've to forgo many innovations to compensate for the lacking of horsepower.

By 2020 China will be self-sufficient in all engines. It will be world class too. Let them laugh, China don't care.

Maybe on par with Russian designers, but no where near the technological capabilities of the West, like the engines from Rolls Royce, Pratt, and General Electric.
Shouldn't it be the other way around?
They have to innovate to compensate for the lack of engine power?

I think he meant forgo stuff that you could put on a heavier air frame. But since China doesn't have powerful enough engines yet, they can't make these heavier air frames.
who are you talking about when you say the "WEST"??? the so called WEST comprises some 30 plus nations doesn't it? unless i'm wrong Rolls Royce belongs to the UK and Pratt/General Electric belongs to the USA, that's two nations here. I wasn't aware the Australians, Canadians, portugese, finnish, greeks, Austrians, swiss, irish, belgiums swedes, Danish, norweigians, Spanish, itailians and icelanders were making military grade jet engines too.
china in that regards is already MILES ahead of your so called "WEST".

Most who 'laugh' at Chinese aviation do so out of fear & envy so they won't necessariy stop even when China aviation makes progress.

By 2020, when WS15 is ready, it'll be ahead of F119. WS10 today is about on par with F110. They also have a next gen medium thrust engine to be ready by then. So unless US has a new generation of engines to replace F119/F110 by then, which is unlikely, China will be ahead of US in military engines.
In commercial engines, CJ1000 is designed to be comparable to the best of US by then like LeapX. Other engines for bigger jets has more to do with commercial considerations than anything else.
