I remember years ago this tech was researched in the US. AFAIK it went nowhere. But perhabs someone here with more knowledge in the matter may shed light about what happened with it.

Practical applications are still a very long way off...

From zhuhai airshow: Some details on the future space station robotic arm: it has a total length of 10m, capable of handling a max payload of 25t and has 7° of freedom (IIS Canadarm2 is 17.6 m when fully extended, can handle large payloads of up to 116t and has 7° of freedom).
