As of October 19, the meteorological satellite Fengyun-2C had been in orbit for eight years.

Developed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST), Fengyun-2C was designed for three years in space, but has continued to operate for a further five years.

The Fengyun-2 series is China's first generation of geostationary meteorological satellites. The series includes four geostationary meteorological satellites, namely Fengyun-2C -- China's first geostationary orbit weather satellite -- Fengyun-2D, Fengyun-2E and Fengyun-2F.

After operating at 105° degrees East Longitude for five years, Fengyun-2C was replaced by Fengyun-2E on November 25, 2009, and was then moved to 123.5° degrees East Longitude.

Fengyun-2C can provide continuous meteorological monitoring and has played an important role in weather forecasting and disaster reduction for China and other countries.

Sri Lanka's first communication satellite will take to orbit on November 22 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in China and it will be positioned over Sri Lanka, beginning a new era in communication.

The launch will take place around 9:30 p.m. local time and the satellite will be positioned above the country in the Geo-Stationary orbit at 87.5 degrees East in just seven minutes. It will be operational for commercial purposes in the region by early June 2013.

The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka entered into a partnership agreement early this year with SupremeSAT (Pvt) Ltd. to launch the satellite at a cost of US$ 320 million. The total investment for the project is estimated at US$ 360 million which also included the construction of a satellite Content Management Station and a Space Academy in Kandy which is now in progress.

Sri Lanka will be the 45th country in the world to own a communication satellite and the third in South Asia. India and Pakistan have their own satellites.

The Sri Lankan company SupremeSAT will be the 27th private company in the world to own a satellite. The Company sources said that it is currently negotiating with the Maldives and Afghanistan to build satellites for them as well.

SupremeSAT has entered into an exclusive partnership agreement with China's State-owned China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) for the design, manufacturing and launching of the satellite. (niz)

China to deliver communication satellite for DR Congo
Xinhua | Agencies
Published on November 18, 2012 10:37
The state-owned China Aerospace & Technology Corporation (CASC) will team up with China Telecom to provide communication satellite in-orbit delivery for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to a commercial contract inked Saturday in Zhuhai.

The satellite, CongoSat-01, will be launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province within three years from when the contract takes effect, according to Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC), a CASC subsidiary that signed the contract with DR Congo's National Network of Satellite Telecommunications (Renatelsat).

DR Congo is the second African country to ink a satellite delivery contract with China. Nigeria became the first in December 2004, when it signed a contract with CGWIC.

China Telecom, the country's major telecommunications operator, will furnish information technology support for the project, according to the contract.

The satellite is expected to cover DR Congo and the whole of Southern-Central Africa, CGWIC said.

The company also said that at the ongoing China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai, it has signed six contracts and agreements worth a total of 15 billion yuan (2.38 billion US dollars).

China successfully sent a remote sensing satellite into space from northwestern Gobi Desert for Venezuela in September.

To date, China has conducted 35 commercial satellite launches for international customers, sending 41 satellites into space.

CGWIC expects to complete another two commercial launches this year.

Congo has rich natural resources, why you think they cant pay for it?

Unfortunately, many still seem to think it's risky to do business with African & other developing countries.
But when selling to the 'developed' countries where you may be paid in currencies that has a high chance of becoming toilet paper in a few years, doing business with developing countries seem less risky.
