Can't say for BBC's news integrity, but I have seem them make some good thought provoking documentaries, that actually gives both side enough time to make each of their own arguments... SHOCKING I know.

Yep, PBS Frontline show is a very good documentary show.

Yes, though newsweek seems so...tabloid sometimes. The bbc is indeed state-run, and an aspiration on how to run such a media outlet for others i'd say..

Newsweek magazine has gotten thin lately. Plus they fired all of the good editors and commentators.

Anyway, we better get back to the subject of space. I found an interesting article here to read.

Ah sorry, PBS Frontline is a diamond in the rough sea. And there are one or two decent documentary that get released every year which are really good.

What I can see from this SZ-9 event is that it have received unprecedented coverage in the Chinese news media, all the way from initial rocket launch, to docking to every day that astronauts living in space. Almost every second is being watched and transmitted for the public.

This is good, not just because of the PR boost, but also it will capture the next generation of children's heart and imagination of space, and hopefully more of them will want to became astronauts or work in the space industry when they grow up, instead of becoming an investment banker. And this is exactly what we needs, eventually it is only a matter of time that human need to move to outer space for habitation and resource exploitation. If China can be the forefront of this field, that would be great.

Another thing I notice is how important the national leaders have put emphasis on this, almost everyone of the politburo visited the space center during the mission duration, that means hopefully they are not just doing this for PR stunts, but they also give it real political importance on space as well. That means hopefully they will not short budget the space program in the future, and give it full support on developing outer space for both Chinese civilization and human kind.

And lastly, usually when China is being mention in the news, most of it are negative and biased, but I noticed that during the SZ-9 mission there are actually more some positive and neutral report about it, and also the overall feedback from all over the world from the ordinary people are overwhelmingly positive. That means maybe China can now realize that through science, they can reinvent their imagine to the world, they can project the nation as a technological power that seek to use technology to advance the country and rest of the human kind. Instead of the reputation of being communist/cheater/low quality items etc...

Some details on one of the three instruments used for the docking: The microwave radar

Developed by the No. 25 Research Institute(CASIC), the project manager is a doctor who graduated in France. The radar weighs 12 kg and its theoretical range is 160km. During the SZ-8 mission, this radar has demonstrated its high accuracy and reliability, and detected TG-1 at 217km distance.
On June 18 at 9:33, shortly after the activation on SZ-9, it detected the target at a distance of 224km.
11:47, SZ-9 approaches TG-1 and switches to autonomous navigation, the data sent by the radar are stable.
12:41, at 5km away from TG-1, the radar continued to function properly before the LiDar and CCD sensors are turned on.

China Beats Russia on Space Launches
by Staff Writers
Moscow (RIA Novosti) Jul 09, 2012

For the first time in the history of space exploration, China beat Russia on the number of space launches in a given period of time, a rocket engine manufacturer said on Wednesday.

China conducted 10 of the world's total 35 launches in the first six months of 2012, Russia's NPO Energomash said on its website.

Russia was second with nine launches, followed by the United States with eight launches, the report said.

The list also included multinational companies Arianespace with three launches and Sea Launch with one launch, as well as India, Iran, Japan and North Korea, each of which attempted to send one satellite into orbit so far this year, the report said.

Energomash provided engines for 13 launches, or 37 percent of the world's total in 2012, said the company, which manufactures engines for Proton and Soyuz rockets.

China has been making significant headway with its space program since the 2000s. It first sent a man into orbit in 2003, conducted its first spacewalk in 2008 and its first manned spacecraft docking in June. Further plans include a permanent space station and manned flights to the moon and Mars.

Well this is good, but don't mean anything. China still got a long way to go before match US and Russia.

Good news is they are money up and hungry, just like US and USSR in the 1960s.

This may sound almost unpatriotic to most Americans BUT I actually find al-jazeera (English one) to be quite balance and unbiased in their news reporting especially on international coverage!!! Most of their reporters are not even Arabs or Middle Eastern.
I think they have a name that is probably not appetizing to most average Americans (kinda rhymes with a certain terrorist network :) ) which is unfortunate but then again as we all know the average joe citizen of country X is for the most part a sheep ;)

Not always, I find Al-jazeera's reporting on the middle east situation to be the most balanced in the medias, but their reporting on China is one of the worst, it is full of western stereotypes and bias. Oh and don't refer them as sheep, there is actually a name for that, it is called sheeple.

A mini-report on the space program's technology spillover for the public sector: We see the fruits and vegetables naturally mutated through grains that traveled in space. these crops have very interesting characteristics without being artificially and genetically altered by man. Currently these fruits and vegetables are planted in over 1.5 million hectares.

In a second report the rocket's solid propellant has been used to solve a technical problem on deep-oil exploration underwater's pipes.

Finally, a responsible from CASC said that so far over 2000 space technology have been pushed into civilian areas. The economic "boost" is about 1 to 10 (1 RMB invested in the space sector can generate 10 RMB gain in civilian areas).
