look at Ukraine in its present state, its geographical boundaries shattered, its energy supply and economy broken, its brains emigrated, and its future is bleak indeed with no imminent prospect of recovery in sight. All it has now are empty western promises and support which are also fast vanishing.
Therefore if the Philippine Government thinks that it can force China to accede to its demand for a big share of the SCS real estate along with its underlying resources by relying on American backing, it is sorely mistaken. It had better think again, twice, and thrice before making any unwise move. The Philippines is simply not in a position to play hardball against China as the chance of winning is dismal, as the mighty Dragon lives right next door and is not moving away. This is a hard geopolitical fact that the PG must take into account in its calculations.
Even die-hard anti-China Lithuania sees the tide is turning and is subtly asking China to relax its economic sanctions.
To me (I must admit I may be biased, smiles) the direction the Philippines people should take is clear. Side with the Dragon!! China has no record of invading and colonizing any country!!
China wishes for co-development and mutual benefits with partnering countries in its BRI and RCEP projects, so while China brings the prospect of wealth and development, America brings bombs and destruction in its "America First" strategy. So please don't fall for this American strategy of "divide and conquer" to maintain its own global hegemony.
it is a no-brainer for the PG to sit down and negotiate hard with China to extract maximum benefits for its national interests.
But to threaten China with US bases on Philippine soil is to invite disaster because once China is forced to turn Scarborough Shoal into a major fortress as a response to American build-up there, the Sino-Philippine relation will nosedive and be bad for ASEAN as a whole.
