Defense spending should be 3% of GDP considering the geopolitical environment China faces. Extremely dangerous times right now.
spending more is only useful if
1) others can't match, or
2) China is more efficient exchanging money for fighting power.
I am not convinced either is true when China goes beyond 2%, especially in the longer term. China's money will have better return on R&D and basic science.
other things to consider is that money spent on military is gone once spent if there is no war (except if you sell weapons in large scale or protect dollar hegemony like the US.)
Also I think China has plenty of ship but needs a better airforce but is limited by tech. I think more money can pure in once breakthroughs are made.
The only problem with that thought is if you didn't spend the money on defense in the first place, you spend it on war reparation afterwards lol. Aside from the benefit of having a fleet of good enough equipment, it also keeps the skilled labor busy with a continuity of work while R&D continues with incremental improvements and not rely on breakthroughs for planning.
In previous years, there would always be such articles released, and they were pretty much all in line with actual spending.
Thus, I'd wager a guess thst 2024 budget announcement is gonn be in line with previous year increases. High 6 to low seven percent increase seems likely.
