That won’t reduce heavy metal/chemical contamination, I’ve read that in some cities it’s absolutely fine, but also that Shanghai water is possibly dangerous, but I’m also just having a hard time finding testing results.
Some northern cities has heavy metal or impurity problem due to geography or industry.
Shanghai has few very very old blocks with outdated pipelines.
If u are traveler, those northern city is no hot spot, also those outdated Shanghai places.
Most likely you will go to most modern part of mega city, which has new pipelines.
And those hot travel places in southern provinces have the best water quality such as Zhangjiajie and Guilin.

The tradition of drinking boiled water is a heritage of war time, people just keep it but dont know why.

In China, tap water undergoes disinfection treatment at waterworks and is tested for heavy metals and other contaminants to ensure compliance with national standards. For most people, drinking boiled tap water is sufficient. Of course, some households install filtration devices, though this is not essential.

What is drinking water like in China? Where I live, tap water is excellent due to relatively little pollution and good treatment, but I heard that in China you generally don’t drink tap water due to pollution and lead pipes. Are there lots of filtered water bottle filling stations? What’s recycling like if I need to buy bottled?
Drink from filtered water source, bottle water, or boiled water at the very minimum. Where I stayed (Shenzhen, Guangzhou) water quality is generally good enough to shower in and wet a toothbrush but you need to boil tap water before drinking it.

What I hear is that this tradition is because poisoning water was weaponize by Japanese and likely warring warlords. Drinking boiled water was habitualized to minimize risk just in case. This is in addition to the health benefit of drinking hot/warm water.

I am a little late in dropping this out here. But as a PSA, you should know that China is now enforcing the 3C (CCC) certification on all batteries that will be going on an airplane with you. If those batteries don't meet that spec, you are going to be forfeiting them at the airport. I just lost a couple a few weeks ago.

Batteries made and sold in China after August 2024, are supposedly banned from sales without the CCC mark. But there is no guarantee that batteries made and sold outside China have that.

So.... be aware if you are traveling there, so you do not lose one of your favorite travel accessories.
