660MW Thar coal based IPP achieves financial closing...

Lucky Electric Coal Power Project, a 660 MW Independent Power Plant (IPP), based on Thar coal has achieved financial closing on Monday.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the minister for power, ministry of energy, Syed Ali Zafar, with other senior officials of the Power Division, Private Power & Infrastructure Board (PPIB) and the company.

The financial closing documents for the 660 MW power project were formally signed by Shah Jahan Mirza, Managing Director PPIB and I H Haqqi, Chief Executive Officer of M/s Lucky Electric Coal Power Project.
The project will be located at Port Qasim near Karachi, and based on local coal from Thar, an investment of US$ 1080.9 million will be made for implementation of the project. This project will be equipped with the super critical technology and sea water will be utilized for cooling of the plant.

Lucky Power Project is being financed through Debt Equity ratio of 75:25%, with the sponsors being M/s Lucky Cement Limited while the lenders’ consortium of the Project consists of Habib Bank Limited, United Bank Limited, National Bank of Pakistan, Bank Alfalah Limited, Askari Bank Limited Soneri Bank Limited, The Bank of Punjab, Meezan Bank Limited, Faysal Bank Limited and Dubai Islamic Bank Limited.

Upon financial closing, PPIB will also issue sovereign guarantee on behalf of the government in favor of Project Company to secure the payment obligations of Power Purchaser. The achievement of financial closing will facilitate the project sponsors in initiating construction activities at site which will be concluded by March 2021 and project will start generating electricity thereafter.

The Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) which is the lease holder for execution of mining operations for coal extraction in the Thar coalfield, Block II, will supply coal to the project while the electric power generated from the project will be sold to CPPAGL under a 30 years Power Purchase Agreement.

Minister for Energy Syed Ali Zafar commented on the occasion that to improve power supply in the country to make it more robust and reliable, and reduce dependence on imported fuels, projects based on indigenous Thar coal assume further importance from energy security as well as economic perspective and advised PPIB to further exploit the Thar coal potential for power generation.

He also appreciated PPIB on achieving yet another major milestone with the financial closing of another Thar coal based IPP after 660 MW Engro Powergen.

Thar coal reserves estimated at 175.5 billion tons hold vital importance for generating thousands of megawatts of affordable electricity for decades to come.

CPEC first phase completion to improve energy, infrastructure sectors.

President Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum (PBIF), Mian Zahid Hussain on Monday said that 2018 is an important year regarding China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as first phase of this historical project comprised of energy and infrastructure sectors have successfully completed. Second phase of the CPEC project is about to begin which is comprised of establishing special economic zones.

SEZs will bring industrial revolution in the Country and is the beginning of development for the people of Pakistan through which GDP will rise by 2 percent.

The veteran business leader while talking to the business community of Gwader and Karachi said that in the first phase of CPEC Motorways and Highways have been built and extended while railways network will be focused in the second phase.

Karachi–Peshawar main line will be upgraded with an estimated cost of $ 8.2 billion while $ 3.5 billion will be spent on Karachi circular railway to make it operational.

Initially, Rashakai in Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa, Dhabeji in Sindh and Faisalabad in Punjab have identified for special economic zones where both countries will take practical measures to take the National economy and job market to new heights through industrial development, increased production and exports.The former minister said that partially energized Port Qasim Coal Fired project to get operational soon can produce 1320 MW energy.

Two wind projects of 50 MW each will come into production in September this year. 660 MW China-Hub Coal Power Company is estimated to start operations in December 2018. Quaid-e-Azam Solar in Punjab has started supplying 7 hundred MW electricity and helped in reducing the power shortage.

$150 million Eastbay Expressway project is expected to be completed this year. $130m worth Freshwater Treatment facility is supposed to be completed on priority which will supply five million gallons per day of fresh water to Gwader and will overcome the water shortage in the locality.

first phase completion to improve energy, infrastructure sectorsll get stable and all sectors of the economy will positively progress including trade and industry. 7000 MW electricity has added to the national grid through the completed projects of CPEC while 10000 MW more to be added after completion of the ongoing projects which will meet the energy requirements and will help the Country attaining the self sufficient position.

Lahore Eastern Bypass Project Completed A View..

The Six-Lane 16.5 km Lahore Eastern Bypass Project.

The bypass, starting from Mehmood Booti Interchange at Lahore Ring Road, would culminate at Kala Shah Kaku Interchange — the junction of GT Road and Lahore-Islamabad Motorway. Work on Lahore Eastern Bypss Project was launched at Kala Shah Kaku on 2nd September 2016 that would connect with Lahore Ring Road, approximately 3.3 km off Niazi Interchange.The speed limit on it would be 120 km per/h. The project is near to complete.

Changan Automobiles Is Coming to Pakistan!
Changan is set to launch its vehicles in Pakistan.

Changan Automobiles, a Chinese automobile manufacturer, is entering Pakistan and will soon launch its vehicles.


The company was already in talks with the government to get permission for setting up its plants in the country, and Master Motors was awarded a Category-A Greenfield Status under the Auto Policy 2016-21’s guidelines.

The initial paperwork and registration work seems to be coming to an end, as Changan has already issued notices to the press and will hold an announcement event soon.

Source told ProPaksitani that both companies will agree to establish an assembly plant in Karachi. In the first phase they will introduce passengers’ cars, and provides aftersales services as well. The target market will be middle and higher income group.

MMCL is purchasing land for assembly plant in Karachi. After the agreement, construction work will start soon.

As seen in the official press invite, the event will take place in Karachi, at Pearl Continental Hotel in Dilkusha on 29th of June, this Friday.

The company is investing $100 million in the local auto sector.

Bhasha and Mohmand Dams Will Be Built in 2019 ..... Work on Diamer-Bhasha dam will begin in the next fiscal year.

Work on Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams will begin in the fiscal year 2018-19, according to WAPDA. Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Lieutenant General (Retired) Muzammil Hussain informed about the initiation of the projects while he was briefing the Water Resources Minister Syed Ali Zafar.

The chairman added that WAPDA has completed four mega-projects since August 2017 to keep up with the growing water and electricity needs.

Hussain said,

Both projects are vital to achieve water and energy security, therefore, all stakeholders should play their role in the initiation and timely completion of these projects.

Diamer-Bhasha dam will have a capacity to store 8.1 million acre-feet (MAF) of water while generating 4,500 megawatts of electricity as well. Mohmand dam will be built with a generation capacity of 800 MW at a water storage capacity of 1.2 MAF.

The Projects
As per the WAPDA chairman, following projects have been completed so far in the recent months.

Phase-I of Kachhi Canal,
Golen Gol,
Tarbela 4th extension, and
Neelum-Jhelum.
These projects would irrigate 72,000 acres of barren land in Dera Bugti, Balochistan adding 2,487 MW to the national grid.

Following projects are ready-for-construction schemes,

1,410MW Tarbela 5th extension,
2,160MW stage-II of Dasu project,
7,100MW Bunji project, and
Stage-II of multi-purpose Kurram Tangi dam.
Stage-1 of Kurram Tangi dam will be completed by 2020 while Dasu hydroelectric power project, with a 2,160 MW capacity, will start adding electricity by 2023.
