36 dead, 2 missing after plant catches fire in central China

A total of 36 people died, two were injured and two are missing after a plant in Anyang, central China's Henan Province, caught fire on Monday afternoon, a reporter from China Media Group said on Tuesday.
The fire occurred at 4:22 p.m. and was brought under control at 8 p.m.

Suspects believed to be behind a fire on Monday that has killed 38 people, and two people with minor injuries were taken into police custody on Tuesday in Anyang, Central China's Henan Province.

The official account of Anyang authorities on Tuesday released a notice about the blaze, stating that on Monday evening Anyang's fire and rescue detachment received a public alarm over a fire burning at a trading company in Wenfeng district.

After receiving the alarm, the municipal fire and rescue detachment immediately dispatched forces to the scene, public security, emergency, power supply and other joint working units rushed to the scene to carry out emergency treatment and rescue work.

At about 8 pm, the fire was largely extinguished, before being completely subdued three hours later.

According to the preliminary reports, as of Tuesday morning, the accident has killed 36 people, with another two people still missing. Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries that were not life-threatening.

The local public security department has apprehended those believed to be responsible for the fire.

In the aftermath of the incident, provincial authorities and relevant units arrived at the scene to coordinate search and rescue work. Family members of the victims are being consoled and have been offered psychological counseling.
