Indeed interesting, but not truly conclusive... isn't this the same pylon here on a J-16 carrying a PL-15 (top) and a PL-12 (bottom)?

Pretty sure they're different. That pylon for PL-12 looks similar but is noticeably longer, and its model number begins with 'PFT12[....]' -

Whereas the pylon for PL-15 is this -

I think these are two different pylons, the tip of the top one has subtle upward angle to it on the lower edge that the bottom one lacks, and seems overall shorter.

edit: I missed the much better explanation that Helius put out…

anyways here’s a demonstration of what I was talking about with the upward angle

A rare image - and IMO the first truly clear one - showing a PLAAF J-16 carrying the Yings III model 390 targeting pod.

Those are indeed rare, clear pictures.

That said, I'm not sure if that is necessarily "Yings III model 390" -- at the very least, it looks externally similar to that model as well as existing K/JDC01 and K/JDC03 families.
Of course, external appearance doesn't determine how capable or advanced something is, and targeting pods often don't change externally in appearance as new variants emerge, as it is the internals that are important.

Interesting, the J-11BS taking part in the Changchun Air Sow has the serial number 66560 and is as such from the rarely seen 55th Air Brigade at Jining (Jiaxiang FS), Wuhan Base under the CTC.
Also noteworthy, it is cn. 0606.

I think Jining is a city in Shandong Province and the whole province is under the Northern Theater but not the Central?

need to check when I’m back home but out of memory I think you are correct concerning the base, but it’s subordination is a bit off-standard under the CTC.
